What are the functions of a Chorbishop in the Melkite Byzantine Church? How is a Chorbishop different from an Archmandrite? What type of vestments and pontifica can a Chorbishop wear? Anything additional than a Archmandrite?

I know Chorbishops are present in the Maronite and Syriac Churches, but I met a man who's uncle is a Chorbishop, and he was unable to answer my questions.

The Greek-Catholic Churches have not had Chor-Bishops for several centuries. These days an Archimandrite often serves the same purpose (which is to have minor prelates available for quasi-pontifical services on appropriate occasions). Some other Eastern Churches still retain Chor-Bishops.

I believe the Oriental Orthodox retain this. The Syrian Orthodox ("Jacobite") Church still has them.

For the Melkites the chor-episkopos is the dignitary that comes immediately before the arch-deacon in a procession--i.e., it is now the lowest of the priestly honorific ranks.

It formally had episcopal character.

The chor-episkopos has the right to wear the hypogonation. It has now become so common, that it barely carries any importance today.

I believe the Chor-episcopos was originally the spiritual head under the episcopos of a rural parish (or parishes) outside of the city. In the Maronite tradition, the Chor-episcopos can ordain men to minor orders, but not to major orders.

God bless!

Glory to Jesus Christ!
The Maronites retain Chor Bishops.
There was a very good one who attended Orientale Lumen Conferences for a few years.

Chorbishop John Faris of the Maronites wrote a good treatise on Eastern Canon Law.
