By the Catholic World News: Saudi king to visit Pope
Vatican, Oct. 31, 2007 (CWNews.com) - King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia will meet with Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) at the Vatican on November 6.
The meeting between a Saudi king and a Roman Pontiff is unprecedented. The Holy See does not have formal diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia. The Saudi regime places harsh restrictions on all Christian worship. I hope this bodes well for the many Christians, mostly Catholic immigrant workers, in the Saudi Kingdom who practice their faith secretly and away from roving bands of Saudi "religion police."

Last time I heard anything - which is a good 20 years ago - ARAMCO (a big US oil company) slipped in the occasional Catholic priest in the guise of a "morale instructor"; he would then celebrate Mass somewhere on the ARAMCO compound - for US citizens employed by ARAMCO only; no Saudis allowed. I never knew how they obtained Mass wine.
During the first Gulf War, in the time of the senior Bush, Saudi Arabia had no choice but to permit Christian services for the troops from the US, England, and so on stationed in Saudi Arabia for the then time being. But this was a major cause of complaint inside Saudi Arabia, where the Hagarenes considered it an unacceptable profanation of their sacred territory.

The Associated Press , as carried by MSNBC, reports on the historic meeting between Pope Benedict XVI and King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, the first between a Pope and a reigning monarch of the Saudi Kingdom. Full story: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21653027/In a related story, the Apostolic Vicar for Arabia and Yemen, Bishop Paul Hinder, in an interview a day earlier in Abu Dhabi, hoped for religious freedom in the Kingdom where more than 1.2 million Catholics are guest workers. http://www.cwnews.com/news/viewstory.cfm?recnum=54571
