India-Kyiv On the invitation of leaders of the Syro-Malabar and Syro-Malankar Churches in India, curial auxiliary bishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) Bishop Hlib (Lonchyna) visited India in the last week of August. RISUs Ukrainian-language webpage covered the story on 4 September 2007.

Several years ago, His Beatitude Patriarch Lubomyr received an invitation from both Eastern Catholic Churches of India to visit them, but health issues did not permit him to do so. Thus, this year I was sent to get acquainted with them and establish better relations, explained Bishop Hlib.

I left those ancient Christian communities enriched with experience of personal communication with the eparchy, priests, the blessed and the faithful of both Churches. In fact, God does great things in His churches and we should learn about each other. We can learn a lot and enrich each other in this way . . . great opportunities are before us. All we need is to find a creative approach . . . and get to work, said Bishop Hlib.

Bishop Hlib plans to be with us in Dublin over the weekend of Holy Theophany (old calendar, of course). Everyone is welcome.

as a ukrainian catholic priest i have had the privilege of serving along side six syro-malabar catholic priests in nearby parishes. interesting were some of the similarities between our rites (such as the style of vestments for one simple example). more interesting though are the differences. truly "eastern" is a poor term to use for such a diverse range of churches and rites.
