The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church has blessed a chapel in the prison in Chortkiv, in the Ternopil Region.

I can't think of a better place to build a church.

But I can't imagine it here in the USA.

Apostolic administrator of the Eparchy of Buchach, Fr. Dmytro Hryhorak, together with the chaplain, Fr. Pavlo Menli, the builder of the church, and the council of priests blessed the church of St. John the Apostle and Theologian. The Liturgy was broadcast through the radio network of the institution.
...............................................

The prison in Chortkiv was built in 1898 during the times of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. A court, police department, and jail were nearby. People were led from the court to the jail through an underground path. From 1939 to 1954 more than 1000 people were murdered in the jail of Chortkiv. When the Soviets came, and also the German army, this was a place of torture, said the chief of the IISO in Chortkiv, Volodymyr Zaverukha. It was even difficult to imagine that sometime it would be possible to build a holy church here. Service in this institution has its special character and the presence of a priest helps much to bear the burden and to stay human.

Public schools in Ukraine have also invited Greek Catholic and Orthodox priests to visit students and conduct catechism on-campus as well. Don't see that happening here either.

God bless the UGCC for the great work they are doing. It is indeed sad for us in the U.S. that the same types of things aren't happening here.

Anyone who would like more details, including about the difficult years of 1939 to 1954 can contact Dr Roman Basaraba (MD) who is the head of Prosvita Ukrainian Cultural Reading Society in Chortkiv (Western Ukraine). His grandfather was a personal friend of The UGCC Metropolitan Andrej at the time.
