Monastery on Halki wrecked

The partial demolition by Turkish forestry authorities of a 19th-century Orthodox monastery on the island of Halki, off Istanbul, has provoked the ire of Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomaios and the Greek community in Turkey.

According to clerics at the Halki Orthodox Monastery, which is also located on the island, the demolition work began on Tuesday and was only interrupted after the patriarch was informed and intervened.

Turkish officials forced the monastery guards and their families to abandon the monastery before starting the demolition, Bishop Apostolos, the leader of the local seminary told the Apogevmatini newspaper for the Greek community. The act is a violation of a house of worship and will be condemned in Turkey, abroad and by the European Union, Apostolos said, reportedly provoking an angry response from Turkish authorities.

There had been no prior warning that Turkish forestry authorities had been planning any such venture, the bishop added.

Just one more example of what happens when the "religion of peace" gets power.

ls anybody surprised? One must understand: there are not now and never were any Greeks or any Orthodox Christians (except for the Turkish Orthodox Church, whom one might be able to find with a magnifying glass) in Turkey. Anything that looks Greek or looks Greek Orthodox must therefore be a deception, planted deliberately by the Greek chauvinists, and must be removed at once, since it defiles Turkey and encourages confusion. Is that clear?

No wonder the wood looks new...
he Monastery, which is undergoing renovation due to a generous grant from Dr. Stephen and Dr. Anna Yallourakis of Kingsport, TN, was vandalized on Tuesday, November 13, 2007....

Would these people have recourse against the goverment because of the destruction? I wonder if that is why they tried to demolish it, because they felt threatened by the 'refreshment' of it, meaning to them that there is a renewed interest in the Church and faith.

God have mercy on their souls!
