What prayer is recited on an Orthodox prayer rope? Is it the famous "Jesus Prayer".

Thank You

From what I've learned here, the answer is yes.

The Jesus Prayer in some form is certainly the most important and widely used prayer with the prayer rope. The various forms of the prayer include:

'Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.'
'Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me.'
'Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.'

But other prayers are also said on the prayer rope:

'Most-Holy Theotokos, save me, a sinner.'
'Holy Angel, my Guardian, pray to God for me, a sinner.'
'Saint of God, N., pray to God for me, a sinner.'
'All ye Saints, pray to God for me, a sinner.'

The famous prayer rule called the "Optina 500" gives the following rule to be said each day:

300 Jesus Prayers (i.e. 3 ropes of 100 knots each)
100 'Most-Holy Theotokos....' (i.e. 1 rope of 100 knots)
50 'Angel of Christ, my Guardian...' (i.e. the first half of one prayer rope)
50 'All ye Saints of God...' (i.e. the second half of one prayer rope)

The prayer rope is basically an aid to count prayers, whatever short prayers one desires to say.

I will be going to the local RC church tonight to take part in a Eucharistic Adoration. The intention will be for the protection of the unborn and for the preservation of the sanctity of life from the moment of conception to natural death.
As I'm still relatively new, can anyone tell me what will be taking place? Is it individual prayer or will one of the priests lead this? I'm tending to think that it is an individual thing as it goes through the night.
My question is this: If this is for people to pray individually, can I use my prayer rope? If so, are there any specific prayers for this type of intention? Preferably I'd prefer Byzantine prayers, but obviously I wouldn't limit myself to that.
Thank so much.

Aaron,

Fr. David has listed a lot of them above. Also, use the prayer rope in praying the Our Father. That in itself is the prayer Jesus taught us, there is not a much better intercession than that biggrin

Aaron:

Slava Isusu Khrystu!

Usually the priest leads the prayers, but there is usually some time for silent prayer as well. I am of the Latin Rite and I would not have any problem with someone using an Orthodox Prayer Rope - it is a pious practice and you are using it to communicate with the Lord - that is the basic purpose for going to a Church to communicate with the Lord and to be in His holy presence. We need more people in society who are willing to pray openly.

May the Lord Bless You and do enjoy the Prayer Vigil!

Our Dr. Alex wrote this history of the prayer rope it might help you understand the prayers said on it a bit better.
