The 100th Anniversary of the Miracle of Saint Nicholas will be observed by Metropolitan Nicholas of the Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church and Metropolitan Basil of the Byzantine Ruthenian Catholic Church on December 19th, at Saint Nicholas' Church, Jacob's Creek, PA. Please read this press release for more details.

The Saint Nicholas Center also has this article about the historical event. http://www.stnicholascenter.org/Brix?pageID=496

Here is the icon that appeared on the ACROD website today to commemorate the event. It is really beautiful! If anyone attended the Akathist Service this evening in Jacob's Creek, PA, please give us your impressions!

I recognize the beauty of the art, but my read of the icon is limited. How should this icon be read? (If an answer can be brief.)

The Churches most closely concerned should take a further step: writing an entire divine service in honor of the miracle, and submit it to the ecclesiastical authorities for inclusion in the Menaion. There are already such services honoring other miracles over the centuries; some of these have become "universal" commemorations; others are used locally. But it is certainly time to do this - probably involving the collaboration of those who can collect the information and propose texts, and those who have a greater knowledge of such services in the Church-Slavonic tradition and who are able to write the needed texts in Church-Slavonic.

If it is desired to keep the commemoration of the miracle on 6/19 December, that would presumably involve elevating the rank of the feast and providing the additional material for the commemoration of the miracle. Alternatively, another date could be chosen for the commemoration of the miracle, while maintaining a special festal celebration for Saint Nicholas on 6/19 December - the result would be special celebrations twice a year, which could be pleasant. In that event, perhaps something in mid-June might be nice.

The Akathist last night was was absolutely beautiful. The church was filled to standing room only and the singing was inspirational. Thank you to both Metropolitans Basil and Nicholas for such a fitting commemoration.

Thank you Christina Duranko for your years of research on the St. Nicholas Miracle of Jacobs Creek. She was the first person to ever show interest in the Jacobs Creek Miracle over a decade ago.

The coal mining occupation was one of the most dangerous jobs an immigrant laborer could have. Many large coal companies patronized the immigrant workers by providing land to build a church and even giving some religious holidays off.

This wasn't the case in Jacobs Creek, where the Rusyn immigrant miners lost a days pay for any Holy Day that took place on a weekday.

I remember my Dad telling me a story about my Dido (Grandfather) being asked to work on Christmas Day (Jan. 7th). My Dido shook his head and laughed at the foreman and said "No thanks"!

May we all be thankful for the struggles our immigrant forefathers had to endure while just trying to survive here in America.

As it happens Eastern Churches Journal ran an illustrated article about Saint Nicholas and the Jacob's Creek miners a decade or so ago.

Fr.,

Not everyone reads ECJ. She was the first lowly layperson to suggest that a celebration be put together in time of the Centennial. Christina was the driving force behind this celebration.

Dear Friends,

This is so inspiring! I will try an Akathist to St Nicholas to honour this event and will ask you all for your comments and input once I have a draft ready.

Perhaps the miracle should be observed on the Feast of St Nicholas in May, the translation of his holy relics since this miracle was experienced by immigrants who had thus been "translated" to North America ... ?

The icon above with the Protection of St Nicholas is unique in the annals of St Nicholas iconography and is incredibly meaningful and beautiful.

I very much agree with you, Alex, that the icon is most meaningful and beautiful, but it is not unique. In the St. Nicholas Chapel on the campus of the Greek Catholic Union, there is an icon commemorating the Jacob's Creek Miracle, and it has been there for quite some time.
