Everyone baptized into Christ should pass progressively through all the stages of Christ's own life, for in baptism he receives the power so to progress, and through the commandments he can discover and learn how to accomplish such progression. - Saint Gregory of Sinai

As I have experienced it as a United States Air Force Chaplain they always do? And the question I have always remains the same, so what now? Will it actually change their lives or do they just go on using religion as a crutch.

Dear Father Stephanos,

I sometimes like to think that every situation or trial-- no matter how brief-- that turns a young person to prayer and religious services is a seed planted for their spiritual life.

In Christ,

Alice I wasnt being critical of them, I just think it is a legitimate question.
I am really happy for them and my 12 years as a chaplain brought great spiritual rewards both for me and those I ministered to.

My memories of the Vietnam War may be rusty, but I don't recall any great media attention being paid to any religious revival on the part of the troops there. I think there is a difference in this generation of soliders, perhaps because of the realization that those they are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan are religiously, rather than politically, motivated.

However, any media attention to a religious revival is welcome, since it may influence those back here in the USA. And I agree with Alice's comment about trials leading to "seeds" of spiritual life. Many may backslide for awhile, but others will mature in faith, especially with our prayers for them.
