My memories of the Vietnam War may be rusty, but I don't recall any great media attention being paid to any religious revival on the part of the troops there. I think there is a difference in this generation of soliders, perhaps because of the realization that those they are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan are religiously, rather than politically, motivated.
However, any media attention to a religious revival is welcome, since it may influence those back here in the USA. And I agree with Alice's comment about trials leading to "seeds" of spiritual life. Many may backslide for awhile, but others will mature in faith, especially with our prayers for them.
