I got for Christmas Eric Clapton's autobiography. It is a compelling read, hard to put down.

I really like Eric Clapton's music, and I admire how he cleaned himself up and has maintained sobriety.

But he was not a very good person by his own account, much of his life; his life was filled with drugs and alcohol, and illicit sex.

Rock stars are not heroes; they may have gifts for music, but I find I do not admire any of them personally.

None of them- Dylan, Lennon, Jagger, Clapton, Page- have admirable life styles.

I opened up a My Space page this past week, and I found that I could list only saints in my heroes section. This is not from some prudishness on my part.

I find that in the world of music, art, sports, politics, I do not encounter the true heroes I find in the world of religion- whether it is Mahatma Ghandi, Martin Luther King, JR, Oscar Romero, or Theodore Romzha.

I'm reading a biography of Kruschev by William Taubman. I am also beginning to read from an anthology of Old and Middle English, it contains quite a few works outside of the canon.

For Lawrence: Is the book about Bl Br Andre an older one like from the 1950's or 60's?
For Simple Sinner ( I think it was you ) thanks for the note about Olivier Clement's book - it just came in at Barnes and Noble for me. He is one of my favorite authors. I had never heard of this book.
First though I am reading "Seek That Which is Above" by Pope Benedict XVI - it is quite good -

IT was me, I am so glad to hear it.

It looks like a small book at first...

But you realize after an hour, it might as well be three times as big - you (at least I!) read each sentence about three times! It can be like trying to get a sip of water from an open fire hydrant. Very good stuff.

I'm reading "Warrior of the Light" by Paulo Coelho, because we enjoyed "The Alchemist" recently.

Yes - that was my experience while reading his 'Roots of Christian Mysticism' - it was as if every sentence was a real gem ... that's right!
I've not begun the new book yet. Thanks again - I'd never have known about it.

"Dreadnought" by Robert K. Massie. The author of "Peter the Great" and "Nicholas and Alexandra" does a wonderful job of giving us the history of the naval arms race between Britain and Germany that led to World War I by focusing on the personalities that drove the decision making. I love Massie's narrative style, giving history a personality.
