I honestly don't know. I only found out this Christmas season that it's done in Ukrainian Catholic Churches, well it is in the one I frequent, don't know about the rest.

In all Greek Orthodox churches in the U.S. that I have been to on Christmas eve or Christmas day (whatever the case might have been depending on the priest of the particular church and when he decided to have DL), Western Christmas carols were sung by the choir or both the choir and the congregation after the Divine Liturgy.

Infact, when yours truly was a child, I sang a solo of 'O Holy Night' in church.

In Christ,
Alice

Unfortunately, too many cases of laryngitis destroyed my once beautiful soprano voice...I also took singing lessons as a child, so I was quite trained at the time. Oh well! frown

I suppose it depends on what one means by "Christmas Carols". Those used by (among others) the Ukrainians are also sung in Romanian churches.

In the Antiochian parish I used to belong to they did not sing Carols. They were pretty strict about keeping out things that weren't Orthodox.

In my current parish yes, Carols are sung as part of the Christmas Eve service.

I think that depends on the parish. I know St. George is very strict on the hymns sung at Christmas. Though they are they 'carols' of the Church I suppose. They are not western 'Christmas caroles.'

a friend of mine who had been a member of the OCA parish here in Chattanooga, until he moved to Chicago, brought a Baptist friend to his church to hear a choir rehearsal. the only tune the Baptist recognized was "Silent Night". while Orthodoxy has a plethora of beautiful Christmas music, I myself do not see any harm in a Western carol or two at Liturgy.it can be a great outreach helping non Eastern Christians feel at home. with the large number of converts in American Orthodoxy, a Western air may help the transition for many. by the way "O Holy Night" is my favorite carol. sing it, Alice.
Much Love,
Jonn

The Orthodox parishes in Cleveland, Ohio get together every year at Christmas for a concert on a Sunday afternoon, that features choirs from each of the parishes, and many traditional Western Christmas carols are sung.

At our Mission the choir sang several traditional Nativity chants, along with the Nativity tropar and kondak of course, and two Western Christmas carols as well. It worked nicely, I think.

Back in the 1970's while a member of the ROCOR parish in Munich we had a meal inside the cathedral after Divine Liturgy. I said I had some Christmas songs on a record and was asked by Vladyka Paul not to play any "german" type songs. When I played a record of our Koljadki everyone seemed to be pleased and once comment was it did sound "ukrainian"
