Go find an Irish bar that serves Guinness - preferably draft, though that's harder to find. Or go find a Chinese place that serves Tsingtao (bottled only, alas). DO NOT DRINK IRON CITY! It is unfit for human consumption.

When I saw this post, I had to join in. I'm new to the forum.

Father Serge is correct. Guinness is always good, especially when it is on draft. I love having a good Black and Tan. However, my actual beer preference is for my home brewed beer. For the Spring and Summer, I make pale ales and wheat beers. For the Fall and Winter, I prefer dark ales such as a brown ale, stout, or a german style alt beer. I find making the beer is more economical that buying it plus I have developed a deeper appreciation for it.

PS You do know that both the Water Authority and ALCOSAN(waste treatment plant) are located on the Allegheny River. Well, just don't drink the city water after heavy rains!

It super popular when I was a kid. All my uncles etc.. were drinking it. I think this followed their 15 year reign of terror; Pabst Blue Ribbon.
Then they started selling IC Light in those Au bottles.
Don't know, if the man likes the beer, he likes the beer.

I like Guinness on the tad bit warmer side and then it goes down smooth.........

Pabst Blue Ribbon, now there's a bottom feeder! My Dad used to drink Schmidts in 12 oz. bottles, at basement floor temperature.

Pabst is only beaten by Stag and "The Beast" from Milwaukee as the most redneck beer where I'm from.

The worst beer I've ever had is called Boh Ice from Miller Brewing Co. In my state, alcohol taxes are high and this stuff still only costs 3.35 a 6 pack. I think I had two one time and had an instant headache.

you forgot your Yuenling Premium Beer! It's only 11 bucks a case, and it tastes like it is a 20 dollar a case!

Of course Guinness is great, but if you don't like the bitter bite, try a Murphy's. Or an Imperial Stout, not for the feint of heart, let me warn you.

I love bad beers -- schwill as my friends say. So I LOVE Natural Ice, Natural Light (the Natty's), and the greatest Natty of all: Natty Boh! (National Bohemian). It's got to be good, as it appeals directly to the Lord!

Straub recently came out with a new beer, Peter Straub's Special Dark, which is excellent also.

Also, small correction, Straub beer is pasturized. You have to go an a brewery tour in order to sample the unpasturized stuff.

Never been there but I've heard Straub Brewery has an "eternal tap" in the lobby/guest area of the brewery free of charge to all who enter, of legal drinking age of course.

I'll have to keep an eye out for the dark beer.

If anyone think's Guinness is good they should try a Samuel Smith's Imperial Stout. It's like a rich man's Guinness. Then again it's made at the best brewery on the planet.

I grew up near St. Marys and my maternal grandfather's family hailed from there. I have no knowledge of the beer directly--just passed along what I'd heard so many years ago. Sorry for the incorrect info about it's being unpasteurized. When my grandfather was young they offered a free glass of beer at the brewery each Friday afternoon after the 3 p.m. whistle blew. He said that the beer flowed through a block of ice and was the coldest glass he'd ever had.

My neighbors always asked me to buy them a case when I went home because up until a few years ago the distribution didn't get as far as Altoona.

Straub is also not brewed with any additives, and I have heard that it has no sugar added, etc...
Does it still come with the bag instead of the paper holder?

If I'm correct, Straub is one of the few beers, if not the only beer, that diabetics can drink since the don't add the extra sugar. That's what one of my brother's in law says and he drinks the stuff all the time.

I take it you are now a Pencilneck Geek, Dr. Eric? And from "da Burgh" now, too? Oh, boy! Now let the lingo lessons begin--it's "dem Stillers" not the Steelers. "dahntahn" instead of downtown. Go grocery shopping at the "gian' Iggle" (Giant Eagle) and visit the Strip district. They have some good restaurants there.

I believe there are some good bars around The Priory. If it still is in business. The Priory is (or was, I don't know) in the North Side and is a great Bed and Breakfast that was a convent. The rooms are simple, but very nice. If you have guests coming to visit, I highly recommend The Priory. My wife and I have stayed there many, many times. And there was a great German restaurant right around the corner. I can't remember the name of it right now, though. Any help from my 'Burgh cousins? I have some wonderful memories of my wife and I coming home from the restaurant and sitting in front of a fire, sipping some sherry, talking to other guests. A wonderful end to a great evening.

Welcome to PA--land of the archaic liquor laws. But a great money maker for the state government, so don't expect any changes anytime soon!

I agree with Chris as I'm a fellow homebrewer myself. There are so many great beers out there. I read an article in my Zymurgy magazine back in the fall and the author had been traveling in different countries around the world (mainly Africa and Asia) and while these countries had a few national beers, he couldn't wait to get back home so he had his choice of the thousands of beers that we have access to. In fact, while he was in one African country, the southern part was Christian and they had beer, but the northern part was Muslim and they didn't have beer!!.....well, I guess you had to go an underground type of place in order to get a fermented drink.

Also, as for Straub's beeing sugar-free I think most breweries force carbonate their beer rather than using a type of priming sugar to get the beer carbonated. Some microbreweries will still let the beer carbonate in the bottle and they usually tell you somewhere on the packaging. I believe Long Trail out of VT has their IPA done that way??
