Prayers and best wishes to all celebrating Christmas today.
I made a day of it yesterday. Divine Liturgy and Water blessing in the morning for Theophany. And in the evening Vigil at St. John the Baptist Cathedral (ROCOR) in Washington, DC and then Compline at Holy Resurrection Church (Carpatho-Russian) in Potomac, Maryland (where Christmas carols were sung in English and Slavonic from several texts, including the Levkulic Pew Book and I was invited to lead several of them in Slavonic).
At St. John's there were two "I wish I had my camera" moments with children. At the anointing a four year old boy was lifted by his mother to venerate the Gospel and icons and then went to the priest for anointing by himself. The priest anointed him and then offered his hand to be kissed. The child looked up at his hand and then over at the server distributing the blessed bread. He went for the blessed bread! The perfect moment for the photo was that moment when the child's face indicated what he wanted, and when the priest saw it and started laughing aloud. The second photo was near the end of the service when the server came around with the extra blessed bread, and when a 3 year old tried to reach up for a piece.
The breaking of the bread and sharing at the Vigil ("Artoklasia") works. The symbolism is very powerful.
