I have always worn a black mantilla or a black scarf. I used to have a white one but I lost it. Right now we are inbetween rites so the Melkites I know that cover their heads either use a black mantilla or a scarf of whatever color they feel like. My best friend who is OCA says she can always tell who is a convert because alot of converts in her church try to dress like old Russian peasants.(She is a convert too but doesn't dress like a peasant) No disrespect intended to converts to Orthodoxy.

Where I'm from if any woman wears something on her head it is one of those HUGE hats. I went to a retreat given by Father Thomas Hopko of the OCA, and there was this Greek lady who had this huge hat with all these artificial fruits on it. This was during the Great Lent. Wnenever she would move her head, everyone behind her would move their heads to try to see around the thing. Father Hopko did not seem shocked. I guess he has seen and heard everything.

Oh, Dr. Eric, I can't see the photo, but that might just be my computer connection. I'm sure it's a good one. Well, I think I'll skip the fruited hats unless, of course, I have a russian peasant outfit to go with it!
Seems like at this point women pretty much wear whatever colors they want, that's cool too.Chartreuse and day-glo orange should do it then.

I attend a Byzantine Catholic church & wear a black mantilla. Somewhere- some time ago- I read that married women wear black & single ladies and girls wear white. But, I know that I haven't seen that practiced in most parishes. So- I don't know what's "right". But, I would feel odd wearing white now. Alexis To be honest, if I could find a head covering that ties in the back, near my neck, that would be great. My 5 mo. old is constantly trying to chew on my mantilla and yank it off! oh well- what can you do.

I've heard the baby chewing challenge before and a regular long rectangular scarf, shaped like a outer winter scarf would work better because you can toss the ends back and then tie them for good measure.
I thought the black and white married/unmarried rule was a Roman Catholic observance, I didn't realize that it was observed in Byzcath churches too. In the long run it doesn't matter, I guess.

They have several different styles, and very quick service. Andrea PS, I'm Latin Rite and usually wear black or dark brown.
