Our 2008 calendar from the Newton Eparchy for Melchites shows that the week after the Sunday of the Prodigal Son is fast free but I thought that it was the week after the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee that was fast free. Is my memory faulty or is the calendar in error? Thanks, Paul

The Ruthenian calendar has the Friday after the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee (January 18, this year) as the fast free Friday before the Great Fast, which I believe is correct.

Melkite usage has the week after the Publican & Pharisee as fast free. You are then led gently into the fast.
During the week after the Prodigal Son, we fast on the Wednesday. The usual Friday fast is mitigated this year: no fasting, and abstinence from meat, fish, and dairy products, but we may cook with oil and drink wine.

The week after Meatfare Sunday (27 January) we eat no meat. The fast then starts in earnest 4 February.

Publican and the Pharisee is the beginning of the Fast Free week in the Greek Church, too.

This is what is proscribed in the essay at the beginning of the Metropolitan Kallistos/Mother Mary translation of the Triodion.
