Dear Friends,

Today is a Feast Day of St Seraphim the Wonderworker of Sarov!

Having been given a copper Cross by his mother, St Seraphim wore it all his life and at the prompting of St Dositheus (in reality, a woman) of the Kyiv Caves Lavra (where he was tonsured a monk), he went to Sarov.

He prayed for 1,000 days and nights on a rock in the forest, became a Holy Elder advising one and all, and praying for the intentions of all.

In visions of the Most Holy Mother of God, he heard Her tell the Saints with Her that "This one (St Seraphim) is of our kind."

He fostered a school of Saints of Diveyevo and left a lasting impact on Russia and Eastern Europe and the world.

Yesterday, on the Old Calendar, we celebrated the Naming of Jesus.

Today, we commemorate a Teacher of the unceasing Jesus Prayer and a great Saint of God on whom rested the Uncreated Grace and Light of God.

St Seraphim gave us this prayer rule, among others: "Say the Lord's Prayer 150 times and the prayer to the Most Holy Mother of God, "Rejoice O Theotokos Virgin" 150 times for your relatives and friends, living and dead - and then ask for something that you truly need . . . and it will be granted."

To this day, the Nuns of Diveyevo walk around their Lavra three times daily saying or singing out loud the 150 Hail Mary's of the "Rule of the Theotokos" that St Seraphim said the Mother of God told him directly that it means more to her than any other prayer.

Rejoice Saint Seraphim, Wonderworker of Sarov! (Akathist to St Seraphim)

Thank you for that information. I wonder if his memory is commemorated in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Divine Office Book printed by the Eparchy of Stamford. I have the book and will have to check. Is the Akathist in his memory available on the Internet? Please do let me know if you have the opportunity to do so.

Thank you so much and Slava Isusu Khrystu!

Dear John,

If you send me a mailing address, I'll send you a copy of his Akathist.

My pleasure.

I doubt if he is in the UGCC book. When Father Archimandrite Sergios Keleher was here in Toronto, his Chapel was dedicated to St Seraphim of Sarov.

The Orthodox were wondering how an EC priest would be commemorating St Seraphim and the EC's were wondering who St Seraphim was . . .

I once suggested to a young priest here to include the Feast of St Gregory Palamas with his life during the Great Fast. He did so and no one said anything! They had never heard of him and so thought nothing of it.

Next time, I'll tell him to include a life of St Mark of Ephesus . . . wink

The Akathist to St. Seraphim of Sarov is included in the Jordanville Book of Akathists. And as has been mentioned here before, the commemoration of St. Gregory Palamas was restored in the Anthologion printed by Patriarch Josyp in Rome. Bishop Basil Losten has a good discussion of his commemoration during the Great Fast in Ukrainian Catholic usage in his wonderful Paschal Pilgrimage text.

Fr. Deacon Seraphim at St George, blessed feast day!

Our Father, Who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.
