Have there been any Confraternities or social welfare (laity) organizations in the Eastern Catholic (or even Orthodox) Church? I am thinking of something similar to the Society of St Vincent de Paul where laity reach out of those in need under the direction of the parish priest or in general assist the priest in visiting the sick, prisoners, etc. I can't seem to find anything in my searches.

We have "HOPE" in our parish--"Helping Our People Eat." We have a monthly collection, and a monthly feeding/distribution. I don't know if this is just a parish thing, or if it comes from a bigger group.

I know there are all sorts of charitable organizations run by Orthodox Churches in Russia, Ukraine and Greece as indicated on the website www.pravoslavie.ru [pravoslavie.ru] where they even had a symposium on charitable works.

As with everything else, Orthodoxy doesn't like centralized organizational bureaucratic anything.
