Dear Byzcath Members,

I am not sure if any of you are aware yet, but there is an interesting conference being held at the Sheptytsky Institute of Eastern Christian Studies in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, this July (2-5), 2008. It features lectures by Fr. Thomas Hopko, Frederica Mathewes-Green, Fr. Peter Galadza, Fr. Andriy Chirovsky, cantoring workshops by Fr. Roman Galadza and Melita Mudri-Zubacz, a youth programme, and daily services (Matins, Liturgy, Vespers).

Have a good start to Great Lent (for those on the Gregorian Calendar)! For those on the Julian Calendar, enjoy the Super Bowl.

Sounds like it will be a great conference. I'd love to attend.

But, being an American, I wouldn't be allowed back in the USA without jumping through hoops.

I could go as a Mexican. Then I'd be enthusiastically welcomed back in by all our politicians.

Dear Daniil,

Thank you for this important information. I might try my voice at cantoring and that way the Administrator would allow me on one more forum here! smile

I would have watched more of the Super Bowl, but there were back to back episodes of "Everybody Loves Raymond" last night.

And I think we should call ourselves "Old Calendarists." I heard a Basilian priest once say that the Gregorian Calendar is named after Pope Gregory and the Julian is named for Pope Julius . . .

Say hello to Mom and Dad for me,

Alex

Thought I would bring this topic to the forefront again.

From the MASI website:

Sheptytsky Institute Study Days: An Eastern Christian Feast for the Mind and Heart
July 2-5, 2008

Dear Friends of the Institute,

Please accept our warmest invitation to attend our first-ever Sheptytsky Institute Study Days An Eastern Christian Feast for the Mind and Heart to be held this summer from July 2 to 5 at Saint Paul University in Ottawa.

This is a conference for the members of the general public adults and youth alike who are interested in deepening their knowledge of Eastern Christian theology and spirituality. For those concentrating on academic studies, there is a possibility of earning up to six undergraduate credits by continuing with us for two more weeks of courses and liturgical services.

We turn to you to assist us in advertising the Study Days by sharing this information we have included on our website. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like us to send you some posters or brochures to display in your parishes and other institutions. A vital way of helping us, of course, is through your enthusiastic promotion of the conference as you speak to the people you know. We are also looking for young adults to volunteer some time helping with the youth program. Most importantly, please pray that the participants realize a fruitful outcome to their spiritual and intellectual seeking.

Thank you, in advance, for your good will, kindness and support. Hoping to see you in July,

I am, yours faithfully in Our Lord,

Reverend Stephen Wojcichowsky
Director

Can these credits be transferred towards a BA at other universities?

That would be a question best answered by MASI. You can call them or email them.

Check with you own university because transfer credits vary from university to university. For example, the University of Toronto, will not accept religion courses from St. Paul's University in which the Sheptytsky Institute is housed, while York University will.

(I haven't decided yet, but am considering going. Deadline's in two weeks.)
