Shlomo!

This is my first posting here, and I really love this forum. Brief introduction. I'm 18 and a convert from Methodism. I entered the Catholic Church in the Roman Church at Easter '07, but have been attending a Maronite parish since September because sadly all the Roman Churches in my area are more Protestant than the liberal Methodist community I was at. frown

Anyways, I wanted to know if there were resources for learning Syriac. I've been attending the Maronite parish for about 6 months now, and am seriously considering a Change of Canonical Enrollment. I am completely in love with the Maronite Qurbono and all Maronite spirituality and theology. I'm also considering a vocation in the Maronite Church (keep me in your prayers).

The priest there has become my spiritual director and he suggested a book from Gorgias Press on Syriac. The book was fairly expensive (I'm only 18 biggrin ), not many pages and didn't get many good reviews on other sites I looked at to compare. Could anyone here point me in a good direction for some other resources? I trust my priest in this regard, but he even admitted that it's a fairly fast paced book and good for those with prior knowledge to Semitic languages, which I have none of.

Thanks in advance!

Shlomo Andrew,

I am happy that you have joined. You can start with this site: Beith Souryoye Morounoye - Learn Syriac [beith-morounoye.org]. But as I have told you, you need to walk before you can run, so please start with the resources I have outlined to you, and then lets go from there.

Poosh BaShlomo,
Yuhannon

Andrew is a new acquiantance of mine, and I introduced him to this site. We're both young and have similar ex-Methodist histores (and Italian fathers, ironically!).

Welcome, Andrew!

Dear Alexis,

So there's "Methodism in your madness?" smile

I've lots of time for Methodists, especially the Order of St Luke and their prayer traditions.

Good, solid people!

I guess they became Methodists, to paraphrase St Clement Hofbauer CSsR because they "wanted to live as Christians."

Alex

Ha! Yes, I think Methodists are indeed solid people. If I were going to be Protestant, I think I would be Methodist, and not just because I grew up as such. There is a very holistic but still totally Christ-centered way in which the Methodist faith approaches the Gospel.

Dear Alexis,

Have you seen the Divine Office of the Methodist Order of St Luke?

An amazing achievement and one based on inspiration from St Basil the Great! They pray the seven Hours!

And you are more than right about their holistic approach. Great people of God.
