Patriarch Bartholomew will be in Rome to celebrate the 90th anniversary of his alma mater, the Pontifical Oriental Institute.

Fr. Serge Rumor has it those Pontifical Oriental Institute alumni really know how to throw a shindig. I had heard he was bringing a covered dish in the same fashion I had to for my last reunion. No word yet on what His All Holiness is brining!

Apparently they spoke briefly and then prayed the Pater Noster together in Latin in the chapel of Urban II.

Seems be an awful lot of traficking going on back and forth.
I wonder if we might have some kind of fantastic anouncement in the near future.
We can only live in hope.

The traffic is relegated to the Mediterranean, though. Not so much with Russia.

Stephanos I Am I alone in noting how very casual, low key amd "not a big deal" this visit was? I mean years ago this would have been talked about for months or weeks. Now it seems as though the PoC just happened to be "in the neighborhood" and ducked into the Papal offices to say "hi" I imagine the conversation went something like this: "Hey Ben!" "Bart! What are you doing in town?!?!" "Goin' to my reunion... how's life?" "Great... just working on this encyclical... was getting ready to take a Fresca break - want one?" "Trying to cut back! Thanks though... Wanna hit the chapel?" "Let's do!" (Casual reference for humor - no offenses intended or meant!) I find this very heart-warming.

It was under this atmosphere, during lunch, that Pope Benedict personally (officially?) invited Patriarch Bartholomew to attend the ordinary World Synod of Bishops (of the Catholic Church) this October, not just an observer, as in the past, but to deliver a speech (or "intervention") before the assembled Catholic (East and West) bishops of the world.
News reports indicate that the EP has accepted the invitation and he may lead a delegation of Orthodox bishops to this historical and momentous event.
It was observed that the World Synod exemplifies the existence and reality of the concept of "conciliarity and authority" working at the universal level as first recognized by the Orthodox Churches at the 2007 Ravenna Meeting of the International Commission.
A small step or a giant leap! ! ! ?

Maybe someone noticed that the world didn't end when the Melchites entered communion with both Rome and the Antiochan Orthodox . . . a little bit here, a little bit there, and suddenly were moving in His direction rather than devoting energy to the spat. As this spreads, it will be harder for anyone to justify staying out.
