Archbishop-Metropolitan Laurus (Skurla) was born in the Carpatho-Rusyn village of Ladomirova, Svidnik District of Eastern Slovakia in January 1, 1928.

Blessed repose and eternal memory!

May his memory be eternal!

I am shocked by the news.

Had he been ill?

I give thanks to God for Metropolitan Laurus' work in healing the schism between ROCOR and the ROC.

Vicnaja Jemu Pamjat!

I had the opportunity to meet him in my own backyard a couple of times. I live in Jermyn, Pa. The next town over is Mayfield, Pa. To the best of my knowledge, St. John the Baptist Parish in Mayfield is the largest American parish in ROCOR. It is a former OCA parish (and was originally Greek Catholic in the late 1800's, but followed Fr. Alexei Toth into Russian Orthodoxy). Having been born and raised in New Jersey, my only experience in visiting ROCOR parishes (Howell, Cassville section of Jackson, N.J.) were that they were very "Great Russian". My job brought my family and I up here in 2000. I walk into the ROCOR Church up here, and I sew pews, Trojce candles, and hear people singing Preterpivyj at the end of Forgiveness Vespers. The ethnic makeup of that parish is Carpatho-Rusyn, Lemko, and Galician. Met. Laurus, as soon as he became Primate of ROCOR, visited Mayfield. And, then he visited it again, and again. I think it had something to do with that Rusyn connection. And, yet, ironically, although this is primarily an English-speaking parish, and they use English (no "inclusive" language, thank you) in the Liturgy (with smatterings of Old Slavonic), everytime the Metropolitan visited, he would speak to the people in (Great) Russian. God rest his soul and grant him Salvation!

In Christ,
Dn. Robert
