I was websurfing and just happen to come across Dec. 21, 2012 "Doomsday" kinda of deal...with bunch of "prophecies" associated with it.
I can't remember HOW I came across it...but I was very mesmermized (sp?) by it. Not that I believe it, but it seems compelling, especially with the claims that many religions seem to attest to that.
What are your thoughts, observations, words, etc. about this very freaky and scary subject?
The Prophecy came from the Myan Calenmder, which goes in much linger cycles than either the Semtic worlds Lunar Calenders, or the Western worlds Solar Calender. It. in fact, goes in longer cycles than the 12 year Calender use dbyt he Chinese.
It is the longest Calender iwht the longest cycles in the known wolrd.
Its measurements are highly aligned, and ot a great degree of accuracy, tot he stars, and end on a day when the Sun returns to its original point in the night scy afte rmany thousands of years.
This is marked by the end of the Epoch, and htus concludes the cycle of the Calender for the Myans.
It doens't, however, nessesasrily follow that this is Prophetic. There is evidence that he Myans themselves saw Prophecy in the Stars and cycles, and perhaps thoght hte end f the cycle woudl also be met with a destruciton fo ur preasent world and creation o a new, but the Calender in and of itself doens't spacificaluy reference such events, and it simply ends on 21 December 2012.
THen, a new Cycle begins on 22 December 2012, and ill last some 6000 years.
I'm not particularly concerned about the date per se. I'm concerned about the future chain of events leading up to the most horrid distruction ever experienced on the face of the Earth since the beginning of time.
Science seem to indicate many Earthly events that seem to paraell to the Bibical warnings concerning the "end of times."
Example: Magnetic Fields are weakening and can be possible that two poles will be switched....which can lead to the most devastating distruction ever witnessed.
Clues such as bees disappearing due to possible magnetic field situation, increase of terrorism, violence, apathy, etc.
Real question is: "why worry?" Obviously, impending doom is a good reminder to get one's own affairs in order, as well as to try and get others to shape up their acts. But I think the NT is pretty clear that the world will end "just when people say 'peace and security.'" Jesus very clearly says, "If you hear of wars and rumors of wars, then it is not the time yet."
My problem is that there is so much about the world we're just discovering. I find it hard to believe God designed some of these wonderful things that we're just now learning (NFP, for example), yet He would end it all before we had a chance to really appreciate such designs. OTOH, the OT is pretty clear that God doesn't want us learning stuff.

I guess I'm not familiar with that part of the OT.
As I see it, science is a kind of mixed bag. On the one hand, it helps us to understand and appreciate the complexity of God's creative work and the wisdom that goes into every little detail. Seen in its proper light, this has to deepen our reverence for the Creator.
HOWEVER, we humans have a seemingly endless capacity for self-deception, especially with regard to imagining ourselves to be somehow self-created. Many, therefore, view science as a kind of "proof" of God's non-existence.

I heard about the bee problem, and earlier than that, the frog problem - both were tied to pollution not magnetic fields as far as I've heard.
IT goes way beyond the Mayans. 2012 has been predicted by all kinds of calendars and whatnot. Chinese astrology predicts it.
Discover had a fun show called Doomsday 2012 that presented all of the theories. However, no one know what it really MEANS. It might not be anything at all. It might be the reversal of the poles. Maybe it's the day the inhabitants of the hollow earth resurface. Maybe it's the day the Eben's return (here's some good reading: http://www.theuniversalseduction.com/articles/secret-project-serpo-the-ebens-must-read ). I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just good old fashioned conspiracy theory. I'm sure the aliens are trying to teach us all about it, but since the government is covering all that stuff up, we'll never know. Where are Moulder and Scully when you need them?
"I guess I'm not familiar with that part of the OT." Ever hear of the Tower of Babel? "Then the LORD said: 'If now, while they are one people, all speaking the same language, they have started to do this, nothing will later stop them from doing whatever they presume to do.'" (Gen 11:6). SOme translations I've read seem to indicate more a sense of "the more they know and can do, the less they'll need Me."
The question of a particular date is beyond our scope and outside what has been revealed to us to be true. I think we should be very careful when interpreting unfulfilled prophesy.
It doesn't really matter. It's 2037 that we need to worry about
(Unix operating systems have a timer counting the date in seconds since "the epoch" when the first Unix fired up (1972?). It's generally been implemented as a 32 bit signed integer, so when it hits 2^32 in 2037 . . .)
If you believe that the robots will take over and kill us all, this song by my new favorite comedy duo from New Zealand "Flight of the Conchords" will be right up your alley.
Caution: One F-word is used, but despite that the "Binary Solo" makes it well worth it.
