In his first major appointment since becoming the Bishop of Passaic, the Most Rev. William C. Skurla, DD has appointed the retired bishop, the Most Rev. Andrew Pataki, JCL, DD to the position of protosyncellus. The protocyncellus is the bishops liaison to the clergy. Bishop Pataki replaces Father Gerald Dino (now the Bishop of Van Nuys) in this position. As protosyncellus Bishop Pataki will be responsible for the discipline of the clergy and will handle all matters relating to the clergy, plus other responsibilities as assigned by Bishop William. In a recent conversation Bishop William indicated his incredible respect for the good work of Bishop Pataki in establishing efficient order and discipline within the eparchy and his hopes that he can worthily follow Bishop Patakis example.

I'm speechless, and it doesn't happen often. I don't know what to say.

I live in Bishop William's former Eparchy. Nothing shocks me!

Guess that will sink my consideration of ordination for Passaic. Would never be accepted. Oh well. Layman is nice.

As listed on the website? He's a priest of the Latin Archdiocese of Newark and an official of its tribunal. It's pretty common for eparchies to borrow the services of clergy from other dioceses in staffing tribunals. One of the Ruthenian clergy is or used to be an official of a Latin diocese's tribunal somewhere in the southwest - maybe Phoenix; in the past, the Melkites at times used the services of both Maronite and UGCC presbyters. Many years, Neil

For the ignorant among us.
Why is this a big deal? What's the defender of the bond and what's a tribunal?

Fr. Vivona in the Las Vegas Diocese, perhaps? He's the primary canon lawyer for the diocese, but he's greco-italo-albanian, and subject to the Eparchy of Van Nuys. hawk

AMM- Defender of the Bond-(I think) in an annullment proceeding before the Tribunal acts as the one who defends the sacrament as opposed to finding valid reason to annul the marriage.
This may be basic. It may even be dead wrong. The question posted on this thread was more because the name of this priest wasn't recognized as a clergyman from Passaic.

What's the big deal at the heart of the thread though?
