[ Linked Image] Vatican City (VIS) - In a tightly closed meeting very early this morning Pope Benedict XVI announced to just four knights of the Roman Catholic Church that he was banning the so-called "novus ordo," the 1970 Roman Missal. His Holiness said the only Roman Missal to be used for Mass is the 1962 Roman Missal. He noted that vernacular may be used to read the epistle and Gospel by the Priest before the homily. Otherwise by May 24, 2008 only Latin is to be used for mass and all changes so the 1962 Missal can be used must be made to the churches by August 30, 2008. USA and European news agencies call this shocking and a set back for the progress of Western Civilization. The mandated dates set forth by his Holiness are expected not to be met in the USA. A senior reporter for a major Catholic Magazine said his inside tip says it will be late 2010 by the time the USA conference of Bishops reads today's report. He claims his source says if the USA bishops choose to even acknowledge the pope's mandate don't expect changes until at least 2012. The Vatican is scrambling to assert the papal power and enact this new abolishment of the Novus Ordo and re-installation of the "Tridentine Mass" as swiftly as it can. Certainly there will be more to follow as news keeps trickling in. Stay tuned as the world goes into shock. Calling a latin teacher now, this is world wide news reporting.

I'm with Fr. Serge. Stop this nonsense. For one thing, the so-called Novus Ordo is a perfectly valid development of the Roman Mass; to deny that is to deny the Catholic Church. On the other hand, since the Novus Ordo is rarely celebrated according to the General Instructions, very few of us have actually seen it properly done. Instead, we have had the Mass of Fr.Bob or Fr. Pat or Fr. Rocco, celebrated according to what pleases them at the moment. This will not end until we get bishops worthy of the office. In America, that phenomenon has been almost unknown.
[My private fantasy is to see the Roman Rite surpressed altogether and replaced by the Byzantine-Slav Rite, but that ain't gonna happen, nor should it].

My April 1 joke was a bit different. I told the 3rd-grade class that the truck carrying food for the cafeteria had broken down. Today, the cafeteria manager was going to cook what she had on hand. So for lunch they would be having tuna and green beans. The whole class with one voice said, "eeewwwwww." A little later I told them it was an April Fool's joke.

I knew it was an April Fools joke before I read it, otherwise I would have said time for a Te Deum.

On the other hand, since the Novus Ordo is rarely celebrated according to the General Instructions, very few of us have actually seen it properly done. I have seen it and done beautifully for a number of years. My former pastor, who had additional coursework in liturgy after seminary, celebrated the renewed Roman Liturgy with great reverence, devotion, and attention to the smallest detail. For about 14 years he built it up in our parish. He started a choir and hired a professional choir director: it still inspires us. He encouraged me to use my university training to coach the lay readers: every visitng cleric has remarked at the high quality of their proclamation of the readings. He made sure that everything was of the highest quality that went into our worship--vestments, liturgical vessels, incense, etc. So, yes, it may be rare, but I have seen and experienced this liturgy done correctly and without emphasis on the celebrant, and it is an awesome thing. As a pastor that I had in high school once said to me, "The attention to detail that a man brings to his liturgical practice is a direct measure of his faith." So I'd have to say that when the Liturgy becomes the Father Bob show or the Father Tim show or the Whoever show, that that says the man has let his faith gift fizzle. It says to me that the man is essentially bored with the Faith and that is why he makes it a showcase of himself rather than a way to draw others to Christ. BOB
