Sure, why not? (although in the lower picture the fellow with glasses front row fourth from left on the left side of center aisle does look like Ben Stein... laugh )

Christ is in our midst!! He is and always will be!!

I remember His Holiness Pope John Paul II of blessed memory instructing priests and religious to wear identifiable clericals or their religious habits at all times as an act of witness to their vocations.

So much for that if these gentlemen are all bishops.

To put the pictures in context...

Top photo is the meeting of delegates of the Society of Jesus with the Holy Father after the election of the new Superior General, Rev. Adolfo Nicolas, during General Congregation 35.

Bottom photo could be those same delegates at one of the sessions of GC 35. Roman collar is not required for those sessions.

BOB- I hope you don't think our Holy Father John Paul II of blessed memory wore collar and papal choir dress whilst skiing? <GRIN>

Uhhhm, the upper photo is in a palatial environment; the lower looks like a Hilton.

At a wedding, one wears a tux; at an anniversary reception, one wears 'dress down'. When one is working, one should wear comfortable clothing with an appropriate computer case and briefcase with thumb-drives for all the different elements of work, along with an appropriate coffee container.

Apropos the JP-II (of very blessed memory!) attire while skiing, I have a friend who is the spit-and-image of Alexei of Moscow. We thought we'd get him done up in Muscovite stuff, put him in the side-car of a motorcycle and ride around the block of the OCA cathedral here in Washington several times before Liturgy.

Just a thought. :-)

It's just clothes!

I remember seeing some photos of JPII in skiing attire years ago. As I recall, he did wear his pectoral cross!

For a Bishop or Priest - and for that matter, for any Christian - to wear a Cross while skiing does not seem in any way inappropriate. I've never gone skiing in my life, sad to say, but skiing does not strike me as some sort of sinful or scandalous activity. Before his illness, John Paul II enjoyed that form of exercise. He must have worn some sort of collar in the interests of staying warm.

On the other side of the coin, so to speak, a colleague was once shopping in one of those church-supply stores on Barclay Street in lower Manhattan. A biker came in; he parked his motocycle outside but was wearing his helmet. My friend was curious, so he indicated to the clerk that she should serve this customer first.

The biker proceeded to buy a large cope, and a Latin mitre of a size that would fit snugly over his helmet. He paid cash, and wearing both cope and mitre, got back on his motorcycle and went off doing whatever it was he intended to do in this amazing get-up.

(I'd like to preface this post by stating that the following pictures are from a "rad-trad" website and I do not agree with the editorial commentary that accompanies the photos.")

Here's Der Papst Benedikt XIV with his bruder, Msgr Georg, during some down time enjoying their favorite pastime:

here's another of Pope JPII during a ski trip:

Fr Deacon Richard:

I don't see his pectoral cross. Nor would I expect to see it worn over the parka...that would be something too special for the Holy Father to lose in the powder. biggrin

If it is so wrong for priests to wear secular work clothing then you better tell the military chaplains to wear their clerical suits/cassocks instead of their uniforms.

ps. since that second photo was during a religous conference then I agree they should have been wearing their habits.

It isn't inherently wrong, but it seems like an odd practice to US eyes. Europe is a different animal - in Europe only protestant (mainly Lutheran) clergy where Roman collars while outside priestly function, ironic, but that's how it is. But didn't they at least consider a tie! biggrin

Military Chaplains don't wear secular clothing, they wear the non-liturgical uniform - the standard uniform for priests "outside the job" is a suit with the collar. No one's expecting cassock - shoot, if it were up to me, the informal dress would be cassock and cincture with black zucchetto!

The Lord told us that the poor would be among us always.

I'm distressed that he never mentioned the crazies who seem to be in even greater supply.

Just a thought.
