Unforgettably, when Pope Paul VI came to the United Nations he drove somewhere in New Jersey for an "informal" meeting with then-president Lyndon Johnson. The Pope gave LBJ a lovely Byzantine Icon of Christ; LBJ gave the Pope a picture of himself!

This led to a suggestion that for the next time around, perhaps LBJ should have his portrait painted in Byzantine iconographic style.

Even so, one would think that Clinton could have met the Pope where he landed.

I'm pretty sure that when JPII came to Denver in 1993, President Clinton met him at the airport.

See this link for the 1993 airport speech by Pres. Clinton.

Some of the reporting has already annoyed me, but I hope the light of Christ shines through.

NPR captured audio of a person who was hoping for a message that stayed on the topics of Faith, Hope, and Love, implying that nothing controversial or disunifying should be brought up. I would think that some bluntness would be good. Especially if it points the American Catholic Church to God's ways in areas which have been confused with certain leanings to modernity. The pursuit of modernity in spite of Christ is destructive to the Church in America. I don't mean to say that the Church should be anti-modern, but that it should listen to the Fathers and to Rome with an attentive will on those issues it strays.

Most Holy Lord, let this visit cause a triumph of holiness in the Church.

Did a Byzantine Bishop as the Pope a question after the Vesper ceremony? Does someone have a link to that?

Yes, it was Metropolitan Basil - sadly, it ran over time, and I did not get to hear it on my DVR - so I am recording the rebroadcast this evening.

Did you know that LBJ is a 33rd Degree Freemason? It really makes my skin crawl!

I also saw Bishop Basil Losten, sitting to the right of Archbishop Basil. Bishop Losten is still wearing his purple veiled kobluk. biggrin

I figured you would notice that Ung. Actually, I had odds about even between one of two different posters here bringing that up.

Good eye.

Metropolitan Stefan Soroka of the Philadelphia Archeparchy was seen several times along with Bishop Paul Chomnycky of the Stamford Eparchy. I think I may have caught a very brief glimpse of Bishop John Bura of Philadelphia also.
The Eastern Catholic Eparchies were well represented at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

... haven't seen Bishop Losten sporting that color since Archbishop Judson's funeral. Why purple and not black???

Here's a link to a page with all the video, including the address to the Bishops:

Also, here's a transcription (not exact) of the Address, including the questions and answers:

EWTN seems to have everything out there.
