I was just watching Saturday Night Live and in one skit I noticed an icon of St George and the Dragon on the wall of the "appartment" they were in. I just thought it was interesting especially because it didn't have anything to do with the skit.

St. George is a very popular saint.

Even the Armenians and the Hispanics who both have a large presence here in the USA honor this icon.

I was unaware that Armenian Orthodox have a large presence in the United States. How very interesting? Thanks for the info. What are the statstics?
Here in Canada they are a very small minority and centred in Ontario.
John Belushi, formerly of SNL, was Albanian Orthodox and had an Albanian Orthodox funeral.
Quote
John Belushi was actively involved in the Albanian Orthodox Church (a semi-autonomous branch of Eastern Orthodoxy) as a child. His wife, Judith Jack Belushi wrote that John Belushi always spoke fondly of the Albanian Orthodox Church. John missed his connection to this church when his family moved to the suburbs. Judith had been impressed at the Albanian Orthodox ceremonies she witnessed when she and her husband had attended his grandmother's funeral. She arranged for John Belushi's funeral to be an Albanian Orthodox service as well, and was pleased with the service. Halia12,

http://www.armenianchurch.net/

This is the website of an Armenian Orthodox diocese in the United States. It's very informative, I hope you find it helpful. smile

God bless and keep you....

Halia,

The Armenian Apostolic have 4 dioceses in the US and 2 in Canada. The last estimates that I heard for numbers as regards the US jurisdictions was about 25K total active members split roughly in half between 2 dioceses subject to Holy Etchmiadzin (the Mother See of the Church) and 2 prelatures subject to the Catholicosate of Cilicia. The former jurisdictions estimated 45K total adherents, while the latter estimated 25k.

I don't have numbers at hand for Canada, but the total Armenian population up these is estimated at about 40K, roughly 10% of the official census count for Armenians in the US.

Western Diocese of The Armenian Church [armenianchurchwd.com] has its Cathedral in Burbank, with 35 parishes scattered throughout the western US, heaviest concentration in CA

Eastern Diocese of The Armenian Church of America [armenianchurch.net] has its Cathedral in NYC, with 70 parishes throughout the eastern US - heaviest concentration in New England, NY, and NJ

(Father Ron Roberson at CNEWA puts the total parishes for the above 2 dioceses at 120 - but I think he's high. My numbers are in agreement with the diocesan sites and those reported in a recent study of Orthodoxy in the US)

Armenian Prelacy of the Eastern United States [armenianprelacy.org] has its Cathedral in NYC, with 30 parishes and missions throughout the eastern US - heaviest concentration in NY and MA

Western Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church in the United States [armenianprelacy.org] has its Cathedral in La Crescenta, CA, with 8 parishes - all in CA

The diocese/prelature distinction in Canada is identical to that described above for the US.

Armenian Diocese in Canada [armenianchurch.ca] has its Cathedral in Montreal, with 10 parishes - in ON, QC, and BC

Armenian Prelacy of Canada [armenianprelacy.ca] has its Cathedral in Montreal, with 5 parishes - in ON, QC, and BC

Many years,

Neil
