It is a monastic habit, and by tradition black, unless the hierarch is a Metropolitan, then it is white, no? Ung

oui, oui!
So?
Is he a monk? Do all the Eastern metropolitans wear white? I don't believe the Greeks do.
All things being equal, the color of his kamilavka is about the last thing I am worried about.

Talk about head-gear, let's move on. The Pope's mitre today at St. Patrick's seemed a trifle extreme, and not really Pope Benedict's taste. I wonder if it was a last-minute gift from someone in the USA which the Pope felt obligated to wear.

Fr. Serge I think that the Holy Father and his outfitting has been looking alot like some antique Christmas cards I have seen of St. Nicholas!!! In any case, his countenance is sooo sweet! I didn't think that I would love any Pope as much as JPII, but this one has also won me over. He exudes sanctity and the warmth and love of the Holy Spirit! His presence has blessed New York City and my county of northern suburban Westchester(St. Joseph's Seminary is in this county). I have read that since Popes ceased being nobility, (since the early twentieth century?) and just became Pope/Bishops once again, that every Pope has been holy and destined for sainthood. Many years to His Holiness, Pope Benedict! Alice

As I said, the Holy Father usually has excellent taste. It's that particular mitre that I criticized.
On the other hand, it's quite unlikely that Saint Nicholas ever wore a Renaissance mitre!
Since the Pope was and is "Sovereign of the Temporal Dominions of the Holy Roman Church" he remains nobility.
Likewise allow me to join you in chanting a Polychronion for him!

Dear Father Serge, On the other hand, it's quite unlikely that Saint Nicholas ever wore a Renaissance mitre! I love your humour! However, you must admit that the Victorian Christmas card rendition of Santa (Ni) Claus in Renaissance garb is alot more palatable than the jolly one we know today, who bears NO resemblance to a prelate of any period of the Church that I know of!! Respectfully, Alice

Dear Father Serge, Does this picture refer to the mitre in question? http://w3.newsmax.com/a/apr08/?s=al&promo_code=49A1-1I think it is just the color - it does not really compliment him. Had the mitre been white, then it would have been much better. However, the outer red cope or robe is very Byzantine and looks very similar to what Orthodox Bishops wear. Respectfully in Christ, Elizabeth

I dunno, Alice... I am taking it to mean you are only talking about the clothing! I have known a few that resembled "the man in red" in the jolly waistline department...

I'm mightily impressed with Pope Benedict's visit. Besides his sincerity, humility and insistence on a Christian worldview and behavior, he is quite the fashionplate! http://dcist.com/2008/04/16/pope_benedict_x_1.phpIs there a theological reason behind his red shoes? He looks fantastic in white and the red shoes truly rock!

He looks fantastic in white and the red shoes truly rock! There are lots of explanations. Some say they are symbolic of the blood of the martyrs and the pope is the successor of Saint Peter (who was martyred). Others say it is the color of the fire of the Holy Spirit. Most probably, they have their origins in the symbols of nobility. In the royal courts of past ages those of a certain rank wore red shoes. I'm sure others will offer additional information.
