I'm not sure of the exact date or medical details, but a week or so ago Mitred Archpriest Matthew Berko fell asleep in the Lord. Please remember him in your prayers.

At his residence in St. Petersburg, Fla., the Very Reverend Mitred Archpriest Matthew Berko was called to the Lord on Tuesday, May 13, 2008.


He was the former chancellor of Toronto and Eastern Canada for the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy and the former pastor of the Church of the Holy Dormition in Mississauga, Ontario from 1963-1988. He was most recently associate pastor of Epiphany of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church in St. Petersburg, Fla. He leaves to mourn his sons, Walter and John, and their mother, Anne, and will always be remembered by his daughters-in-law, Pam and Diane, and was a devoted grandfather of Cameron, Carley Anne, John and Michael.

He was born on Oct. 29, 1927, in Perth Amboy to his parents, Basil and Mary (Dublanycia) Berko. He completed his theology studies in Washington, D.C., and was ordained to the priesthood in Paris, France on Dec. 2, 1962. Paramount for him through all the trials of his life were his love of family, the Ukraine, USA, Canada, and his God.

Visitation will be from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. Friday evening, May 16, at Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Assumption, 684 Alta Vista Place, Perth Amboy. A Service of Divine Liturgy will be offered at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 17 at Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Assumption, Perth Amboy. Interment will be at St. Gertrude's Cemetery, Colonia. Vichnaya pamyat, so svyatimiy upokoi Christe, vichnaya pamyat. He was my seminary teacher for the Ordo.

We owe him a great debt for his seminal English translation of the Ordo, the first English translation widely printed through the Redeemer's Voice back in the late 1950s.
