Every time I go to St. Nicholas Church (ACROD) in Homestead, PA, I pass the "Temple of the Crucified One", complete with cross and star of david.

One day I took a wrong turn and stumbled upon the block of Homestead that apparently belongs the the "Community of the Crucified One."

I've been trying to figure them out. They've got a ton of priests, seem to have Catholic-like Masses (though I've never seen one "live"); I've seen nuns in all brown habits going to the church and outside the "community", as well as men in brown with yarmulkes on. I take it that these are the Franciscanesque "Chapter".

The whole thing reeks of a cult. It really scares me--and what made my heart fill with dread was finding out that they've got a school!

Check out the website: http://www.ccoministries.org/index.php

Anyone have any input on these guys? And Bishop Edward Donovan, the steel metallurgist who received God's calling?

From their Website

Quote
Who is allowed to receive Communion?
We believe that the communion table is open to anyone who believes in the sanctity of the Eucharist. All are welcome.

That answers it I think

Yes, but read more and they claim to believe in the real Body and Blood of Christ! The communion of saints, too -- you don't get many protestants who do that. AND the "chapter" are all Third Order Franciscans! But I don't the Franciscans know (but who knows these days?).

Like, they're a shadowy semi-Catholic cult.

Seriously, they frighten me. And also intrigue me at the same time. I'd like to infiltrate the "community" and find out what's really going on.

I've come across Edward Donavan somewhere before - still trying to remember where .

I ~think ~ there may have been a change of name as the group I"m thinking of had much fuller detail on their site - they had a 'seminary ; IIRC .

The presence of their group in Africa is what rang bells with me.

Still hunting

OK - it's the same group though it's much harder now to find out info .

Start digging around and look at their section on the Priesthood

He's a seminary reject.

They do have a seminary themselves, too.

I fear for those who follow Mr. Donovan.

Not Catholic and outside the Apostolic faith, they're non-denominationals playing dressup in Latin vestments.

Eddie Donovan/Community Crucified One story in a nutshell

Raised RC, according to his self-published bio, he often played Church acting as the priest when he was a boy.
Indeed an RC seminary reject, he claims to have been sent there against his will (and The Lords, he knew) by the Bishop of Pittsburgh in the 50s
Married a woman who then refused (to his great surprise) to bear children. One accidental pregnancy destroyed their marriage, led to divorce.
Soon after, remarried outside the Church, without considering the prospect of an annulment.
Still considered himself a devout Catholic and got deeply involved in the Charismatic movement.
Led large prayer groups which often included RC priests who illicitly gave Eucharist to anyone in attendance with no consideration of recipients denomination, spiritual or marital state.
When this practice was recognized and condemned by Bishops, Donovan knew this could not be Gods will and says The Lord unmistakably told him (think Damascus road ) that he HAD to leave the RC Church, for God was going to create a new Priesthood one which recognizes that The Lord would never turn anyone away from His table.
Validity of the revelation was confirmed to the protesting Donovan by the multitudinous signs and wonders which were soon manifest through him. Healings, bi-location, receipt of the stigmata during Lent. Signs and wonders they are unambiguously a positive and trustworthy stamp of Divine approvalright?
Open Communion with Real Presence Eucharist (he says he got this Charism via a legitimate RC priest anointing his hands) for all!!!!
30 years later Donovan still leads awell, very devout flock which has also spawned a few locations elsewhere, ordains others into the new Priesthood and therefore carries the title of Bishop.

We (wife and I) have family who are vowed participants in this abomination - please pray, my brethren for Donovans conversion for the sake of the souls who have followed him.

Without revealing names or locations, could you kindly tell us why they were attracted to this cult?

How can people fall for this group? Are Catholics joining it or is it only protestants and other non-Catholics who do so?

Are these the folks that tend to have plain wooden crosses either affixed to or in front of their homes? I recall seeing something to that affect in Pittsburgh a decade ago.

All the family I know who are involved were Catholic and active in the Charismatic prayer group Donovan led in his home for a few years before he claimed the Lord called him to leave. Two adult sisters with large, young families. One was divorced but not remarried and claims (inaccurately, I presume) that this was a barrier to her receiving Communion in the mid 1970's. Donovan is creepily charismatic and had evidently attracted quite a little cult of personality who cling to him as their spiritual father - many were only too happy to beleive that he and they were part of a great genuine movement of The Spirit. Both sisters led most of their young families into the fold along with them. 30 years later they are largely impervious to Theological common sense, if not simply brainwashed. I fear they are in fact bound by something even more dangerous than ignorance and pride.

That is sad. I will keep them in my prayers.
