Hi All,
I'd like to learn about St.Seraphim of Sarov and thought one of you fine people could surely recommend a good book.

Just generally, can anyone recommend a good book of the saints-Orthodox and Roman Catholic.

Thanks and blessings,
Indigo

I have a few, but the two I would recommend are:

Modern Orthodox Saints (5) - St. Seraphim of Sarov
St. Seraphim of Sarov by Valentine Zander

Dear Indigo,

My favourite is:

Product Details:
Paperback: 501 pages
Publisher: Conciliar Press (July 1997)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1880364131
ISBN-13: 978-1880364130

I think it is now out of print, but can be bought on Amazon.

I also have the book that Father David recommends.

It is excellent.

Wow! The prices at Amazon are out of this world.

Fr. David, I was wondering if this might not be the same book you recommended: St. Seraphim: A Spiritual Biography
Lazarus Moore
New Sarov Press 1994
ISBN 880364131

Sounds like yours is a later version (always preferred) but I'm ordering books through the school library and this edition is the only one available.

Dear Indigo,

Actually, the New Sarov Press one is the one I have at home and that I read. The one from Conciliar Press sold by Amazon is what I got when I 'Googled' the author and title. Get the book. You won't regret it, I promise.

I just finished reading this and it was wonderful, as well as being very helpful. Many thanks for the suggestion.

I have all of the small books in this series and liked them. A good introduction.

I noticed that the book was expensive (out of print, and listed on Amazon.com at around $60). I had a sense that this book would be amazing, so I saved my pennies and finally got enough money together to spend on the book. I just want everyone to know it's well worth the cost. If you want to know about the Saint's spiritual growth in detail, from the time he first became a monk to his death, then this is the book for you. He comments on everything from Fasting to his mystical insights, to what to say and not to say to others who might not share one's spiritual path. For me, the book is comforting and I feel like St. Seraphim is right next to me while I read it. Afer I'm finished with it, I'm going to begin it again; it's that good!

Blessings!

I apologize for not listing which St. Seraphim of Sarov book I was writing about in my previous message:

ST. SERAPHIM OF SAROV: A SPIRITUAL BIOGRAPHY by Archimandrite L. Moore.

Well worth the cost for this out-of-print masterpiece.

"You cannot be too gentle, too kind.

Shun even to appear harsh in your treatment of each other.

Joy, radiant joy, streams from the face of him who gives and kindles joy in the heart of him who receives.

All condemnation is from the devil. Never condemn each other…

Instead of condemning others, strive to reach inner peace.

Keep silent, refrain from judgment. This will raise you above the deadly arrows of slander, insult, and outrage and will shield your glowing hearts against all evil."

Words from St. Seraphim of Sarov
