I am pretty sure this says Holy Ghost Greek Catholic Church (because the one right next to it in English said that). I can just make out the first word is Greek or Greco, and the second word is probably Catholic, but that's all I can read... Also, what language is this? Image is very large, may take a moment to load.. [ Linked Image]

It says "Greek-Catholic Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit".
What language is it? I would call it an attempt to write in Russian.

Thank you for your replies. Fr. Serge, thank you for your response. Could it be the language spoken by the Carpatho-Rusyn people? I've read they had their own language that is similar to Ukrainian. Etnick, the church is located in Philadelphia. http://www.almasyfamily.org

It's in South Philadelphia-not far from where the hated Philadelphia Eagles football team plays their games (hated by me, that is-I AM A FAN, SINCE 1961, OF THE NEWLY-ENTHRONED SUPER BOWL CHAMPION NEW YORK GIANTS!). Orest, I'm not quite sure what you are asking. All I know is that the person I spoke with said this is Rusyn.

Slava Na Vekee Bogu
It's OCS- Old Church Slavonic. The cornerstones and edifices of Parishes used Old Church Slavonic and it is CYRILLIC

Orest, I'm not quite sure what you are asking. All I know is that the person I spoke with said this is Rusyn. This is not written in Old Church Slavonic according to Old Church Slavonic orthography nor in the Old Church Slavonic alphabet. Fr. Serge has given you the correct answer. It is an attempt at Russian using the Russian orthography and the Russian Cyrillic alphabet of the time.

I agree with the opinions that it is NOT Church Slavonic.It reads "Hreko(greko)-Katholitska Tserkov Soshestviya Sviatoho Dukha".If it was Church Slavonic it would be "Hreko-Katholitskaya Tserkov Soshestviye Sviataho Dukha".The way it is written does not make sense to me-it seems to be a mixture of Rusyn/Ukrainian and Church Slavonic.If it was Ukrainian I think it would say "Hreko-Katolyts'ka Tserkva Zishestya Sviatoho Dukha".And in Slavonic it might even be "Katholicheskaya".I don't know,I don't want to say it is gibberish but...
There are many Churches and grave stones around with this kind of "cross pollination",so I guess in the end it's no big deal!
