Will all of the online and distance learning opportunities and degrees available to Evangelical Christians, is there anything available for Eastern Catholic laity to pursue?? For example, degrees in Theology, Biblical Studies, etc.

Bless you for your response,

Walter

This is funny. I searched for someone else the other day that was wondering the same thing. I was supprised to find a list - which I didn't completely read - on the USCCB site. Maybe it will help

I found this Ukranian Catholic site that might be helpful.

Does anyone have any information or recommendation on them?

I'm going to give the Ukrainian Catholic program a try. I'll post when the program has gotten underway.

Errm, for Eastern Catholics, and Eastern Christians in general, I'm not too sure apart from the St. Stephens' program. However, overall, there are some Catholic distance learning courses. If I'm not mistaken, there's a Steubenville M.A. in Theology program and I think there are some Jesuit universities who have come together to offer distance learning theology courses. If you'd want to Easternize it, I suggest having an Eastern Catholic priest to be an advisor or consultant of sorts. It can help, I suppose.

I can only speak for the Eastern Orthodox, but I can not forsee getting an M.Div. online for candidates for ordination for the priesthood.
Our candidates need to live in a seminary and participate daily in all the liturgical services of our church. Learning also comes through this. It is important for candidates to learn fromand to learn to love the liturgy.
Also by living in the seminary for the years required, there can be an examination of the candidate's character and suitability for the priesthood.
I know some Eastern Orthodox seminaries and theological colleges offer some courses by correspondence and maybe some by internet/online but there is always a residence requirmenet to live in the seminary itself.
I can't see this ever changing.

I am eastern Catholic and have done the MA program from Holy Apostles College and Seminary in Connecticut. They offer 2 programs entirely online, MA in Philosophy and MA in Theology. They are a Roman Catholic school but you could supplement with your own reading or simultaneously enroll in the St. Stephen's program. Doing both wouldn't be too expensive but it would give you a nice balance. For future reference though, if you plan on using your degree professionally or pursuing doctoral studies you need to choose a program that is accredited by a regional accrediting body. Catholic Distance University or the St. Stephen's are not fully accredited.

Good points about accreditation. It is the ATS: Association of Theological Schools that accredits graduate theological degrees.
See their home page here: http://www.ats.edu/Pages/default.aspx

There are only three Eastern Orthodox theological schools that are accredited:

You can't use distance learning for ordination. It never works. It's a good aid for laypersons, but not for orders. You'd still have to enrol for a course and be physically present.

Bear in mind that the seminary as an institution is a fairly modern development.

or just enrol part-time in any theological school and just have your parish priest as your director. Oh yes... get your wife's approval :p
