There are Sisters of St. Basil in various cities in Romania, some of whom also speak English and/or Italian. Most of the younger members are involved in ministries - there is a lovely retreat center in Baia Mare, a nursery school in Cluj-Napoca, as well as the Provincial home, parish ministry in Gherla and Lugoz. A few have visited the United States and probably will again in the future. There are also Basilian Fathers in Romania although few in number and not yet really organized in the way the sisters are.

GLORY TO JESUS CHRIST!
A couple of years ago, Romania was the "Host" country at the Folklife Festival on the Mall in Washington,DC. There were several wood carvers who came from Romania and built a traditional wooden chapel that was assembled on the Mall. I have wonderful fotos of the outside and interior.
The chapel was "acquired" by the Romanian Greek Catholics here in this country. Does anyone know what happened to it? I had heard that it was supposed to be re-constructed in the Chicago area but have heard nothing since.

Yes the chapel is here in Canton, Ohio and will be reassembled this summer here in the grounds of the Catherdral. Should be finished by September.

But if someone were to build a small Rusyn-style chapel, would any of our churches even want or accept such a thing?

We have nothing like the Romanian example and I doubt that any of our churches would have any use for such a thing. You can bet the ACROD chapel that's going to be consecrated on August 16 at Camp Nazareth will be done up right, that's for sure.

Having once been to the GCU chapel, I'll go out on a limb and say that I think it is rather nice. However, I view it as more of a "suburban American idealized" version of a Rusyn wooden church, not the "real deal". I haven't been to the Camp Nazareth church (yet), but from the photos on the ACROD site it appears to be much the same. I'm not saying this to disparage either building, just that they don't seem like a replica of something that was built in the past. I suppose I shouldn't say that, though, having never been to kraju... Maybe someday I'll be fabulously wealthy and be able to build an "authentic" wooden chapel somewhere.  I have a bad feeling, though, that government regulations would make certain stipulations for construction which our ancestors did not have to deal with. Dave
