Since we have a fair number of Pittsburgh residents on this Forum, I wanted to let you know that my bride-to-be and I have decided to settle in the Pittsburgh area after our September 6th wedding.

So, if anyone has any tips for new residents, especially about good places to eat, things to do, common knowledge, etc. please share it in this thread! It's been a few years since I've been to Pittsburgh, so I need a refresher!

Congratulations! When you get to Pittsburgh, make sure you arrange to take a ride on the "incline" if you had not done so in the past. It is near one of the rivers (I forget which). It is similar to a ski lift, but had been used as a means of transporting steel workers up and down a huge hill. Now it is used by residents of some town houses in the area, and by tourists looking for entertainment.

The South will be the poorer for your return to the holy land of Pennsylvania, but I suspect it will survive and I'll bet Mom and Dad are pleased to have you that much closer to Stroudsburg.

There was never any real estate bubble in the Pittsburgh area so home prices have remained stable.

Pennsylvania still has no sales tax on clothing.

There are two inclines in Pittsburgh, both on Mt. Washington. The Monongahela Incline is easily accessible from Station Square, on Carson Street on the South Side. The Duquesne Incline is farther up Carson Street.
The Gateway Clipper & Just Ducky tours are both accessed at Station Square.

Restaurants? My wife's favorite is Eat 'n Park. They're inexpensive, clean and the food is good. My wife loves the Nantucket Cod. Seriously, there are a lot of restaurants here - the only things missing are a good Argentine steakhouse and a good place to get Cuban food.

Traffic into "Dahntahn" is the worst from the East suburbs - it's the easiest from the North Hills.

There are more parish festivals here than anyplace else in the world.

Baseball has been blah here for so long that people go to see the fireworks. The Steelers rule. Don't even think about rooting for anyone else. The Penguins are very popular too.

Shopping/dinner/movie at the Waterfront

The list goes on and on depending on your interest!

Outside of Pittsburgh there is lots to do too!
Idelwild Park, Laurel Caverns, Seven Springs, Fort Necessity, Ohiopyle-white water rafting, etc.

I went on a bus trip to the Holy Land a month and a half ago. The amount of domes that can be seen while driving into town can make an Eastern Christian salivate!

It would take a month or longer to casually see all of the churches!

I personally dislike the suburbs and would encourage everyone to move into the city. You can walk or bike to work, or take a bus.

That eliminates the traffic and gasoline concern right there.

I live in the South Side. Everything is right there within walking distance. Of course, I hear the schools are better in the burbs, but I don't know what's what.

Congratulations on your move to the Holy City. In my experience, the people are lovely.
