I found this article on Spiritdaily.com, and it struck me rather odd at first. YOu know the thought, "oh my San Francisco", not that I am all that on how Rome does things. Surely for how orthodox Pope Benedict is in his belief and doctrine, he would not put someone there that thoght otherwise. Yet, it sounds like the Archbishop would be able to make great in-roads into reconcillation of the Sister Churches, and helping more here...... Levada in line for key job at Vatican Pope said to want S.F. prelate as chief doctrinal watchdog Don Lattin, Chronicle Religion Writer But Former Vatican diplomat John-Peter Pham said Pope Benedict has more global reasons for considering Levada for the key Vatican post.
Pham said Benedict hopes to use his papacy to strengthen ties with the Eastern Orthodox churches, which split off from Rome centuries ago in a dispute over the power of the pope.
"Levada is the academic expert on that topic,'' said Pham, author of "Heirs of the Fisherman -- Behind the Scenes of Papal Death and Succession.'' http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2005/05/11/MNGDACNA051.DTL

I don't know a thing about the Archbishop, but I think our Pope is known for having good judgement. So I do have to trust Pope Benedict on this. I am just thanking God he isn't looking toward Los Angeles.

"Levada is the academic expert on that topic....'' Hmmm.... According to St. Malachy, this papacy will be known as the "Glory of the Olive Tree." Read the following about Archbishop Levada's coat of arms (found on the Archdiocese of San Francisco website): "...the personal coat of arms of Archbishop Levada. These arms are composed with the three main colors of the Portuguese flag: red, gold (yellow) and green. The olive tree is taken from the arms of the Oliveira family, from which the name of Levada is derived." Interesting.... Martin

Dear Friends,
The new Pope has a tremendous international reputation for being erudite and strong-willed.
Let's give him some time to settle into his new mitre . . .

Not sure how I missed this thread until now, but...now that Archbishop Levada has really been appointed...just want to add...I am not sure he has been the Archbishop of San Francisco all that long. He was formerly the Archbishop of Portland, Oregon. Hey, that's up here in the NW - my country! Anyway, Charles, I am also trusting Pope Benedict's judgment on this. Having had the job himself for so long he knows what the job means and must have prayerfully discerned the Archbishop as the right person for the position.
