This new gallery includes significant Orthodox icons. Let's just hope that the gallery soon opens a web site so we can all have a look.

President and Ecumenical Patriarch open portrait gallery

In the Ukrainian House President Victor Yushchenko and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I opened a gallery of portraits of famous Ukrainians and an exhibition of Orthodox painting.

"We are returning to Ukraine and to the whole world the names of our famous spiritual zealots, fathers of the church, great state figures of the past, cressets of education, art, medicine." - said Victor Yushchenko at the event. "... the asset each of them made into national and, often, into the world's treasury of spirituality, culture and science is undoubtedly priceless", - he added.

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I also praised the idea of opening of such an exhibition. He also handed over a present from the Ecumenical Patriarchate for the Ukrainian nation – icon of St. Andrew, painted at the Mount Athos and mosaic "The Kind Pastor".

Sorry, I don't know how to include the image. If anyone else can add it please do so.

There are some more pictures of the gallery here:

Dear Orest,

Thanks for posting the links to the gallery. If you click on picture #7 and then enlarge it,you can see an icon of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.By pointing this out I wish to state that I am NOT trying to be provocative or to open another forum debate on whether we should have these images in our churches. Being Orthodox myself,I can truly say that I see no problem whatsoever with devotion to this image of our Lord.

Although I cannot get into most depictions of the Sacred Heart,I would not mind at all having a copy of that one in my icon corner.I guess with all the other icons on the wall there it just seems "to fit".

I just bring this up so that other members can see it too and judge for themselves.

In Christ,
Nino
