the proposal to canonize Protopresbyter Gabriel Kostel'nyk is unlikely to advance the loft goal of Church unity!

Well, all the Pope has to do is renounce supreme, universal, immediate jurisdiction over all Churches and renounce papal infallibility. If the Pope were to do that, then I believe that everything else would fall in place.

I agree and I don't JS there would still be the dogmatic and doctrinal issues but, it would really help

In Christ,

Unfortunately that is somewhat like asks an elephant to admit it doesn't have a trunk! To ask for or expect such a thing is very silly indeed.

In other words, the Pope must renounce Catholicism!

Orthodoxy could simply accept primacy and universal jurisdiction, as claimed by St. Leo the Great and Gregory the Great and Gregory II, among others, and the problems would go away as well.

I once wrote a blog post (hasn't everyone written a blog post?) about the difficulties of reconciling two churches who see themselves as "the Church".

That about sums it up...the Orthodox will not accept infallibility since there is NO history of the Pope asserting it and the ENTIRE CHURCH accepting it...so those who think unity is inevitable are sorely mistaken...that's the sticking point neither side will move on...The Orthodox simply will not accept it and if the catholic church (read Roman Catholic Church) gave in on that it could potentially bring down other teachings as well...

Let's just wait for the Lord to come and get us out of the mess we're all in.

Why do you say that. Fr. Gabriel was a martyr for the faith. he was killed by Stalin's thugs.
Fr. Gabriel was a sincere believer who spent over 20 years writing against Latinization in the UGCC. He was not an opportunist. He was a sincere Christian.

I have not called Father Gabriel an opportunist. He was terribly frightened - with good reason - and allowed the Soviets to use him. That doesn't make him an opportunist. But it is not a mark of heroic sanctity either.

However, you raise an interesting question. You report that Father Gabriel spent over 20 years writing against Latinization in the UGCC. Now, just where have you found which of Father Gabriel's writings, and in what language(s)?

There is a strong possibility that several pieces of writing which the Soviets attributed to him were not, in fact, his own work. The more that can be found - preferably in the original language(s), easier it becomes to determine whether the same man who wrote A also wrote B.

And there are other reasons why your report is of serious interest. With thanks for your attention,

Fr. Serge
