Warm festal greetings to everyone for today's lovely double celebration. The Holy Protection is becoming increasingly popular in Greece and the Middle East.

Happy Feast Day!

I joined our sister parish in New Brunswick, New Jersey, this morning to celebrate their Patronal Feast with them. My presence meant that they heard a little English in the Liturgy! smile

It is. 1 October on the Julian Calendar falls on 14 October on the Gregorian Calendar.

Dear David,

As you know, I am Orthodox and I said I celebrated the Feast today.

Most Orthodox Christians (and, I believe, the majority of Greek Catholics as well) throughout the world still retain the Old (i.e. Julian) Calendar. So for them today (14 October, n.s.) is 1 October, the Feast of the Protection of the Mother of God.

However, most Orthodox Christians (and, I believe, almost all Greek Catholics) in the United States have adopted the New Calendar. For the Orthodox this means the so-called Revised Julian Calendar, which is the same as the Gregorian Calendar for Menologion (Holy Protection, St Nicolas, Christmas, Theophany, Annunciation, Dormition, etc.), but retains the Julian reckoning for Pascha and all the days dependent on that date (Great Lent, Palm Sunday, Ascension Day, Pentecost, the Sundays of the year, etc.) For Greek Catholics the New Calendar means the Gregorian Calendar for both the Menologion and the Paschal Cycle. So for most Orthodox Christians and Greek Catholics in this country today is 14 October, the Feast of the Martyrs Nazarius, Gervase, Protase and Celsius of Milan.

The Russian and Serbian Orthodox Churches in this country still keep the Old Calendar. I am a priest of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, so I do as well.

In the USA, there are some parishes in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese that have the old calendar (Julian Calendar), especially those who have come over from the Jerusalem Patriarchate.

There are also some parishes in the OCA that follow the Julian Calendar, for instance, St. Herman Orthodox Church in Oxnard, California. The Diocese of Alaska in the OCA also follows the Old Calendar, unless that has been changed recently.

It does cause confusion, but that is life.

Except for the Diocese of Alaska, and scattered parishes in some of its other Dioceses (especially the Diocese of the West), the OCA has adopted the New (Revised Julian) Calendar.

Yes well - not really wanting to confuse things more

BUT Fr Serge is Eastern Catholic and he celebrated the Feast yesterday so that puts him on the Julian Calendar smile

And , in Europe the UGCC is also on the Julian Calendar so I , in the UK, also celebrated the Feast yesterday smile

The majority of Greek-Catholics continue to follow the Julian Calendar (Ukraine has MANY Greek-Catholics!).
