The Archeparchial Committee on Scouting announces the first Light is Life Camporee for Boy Scouts to be held at Camp Guyasuta, Pittsburgh from Friday, 11/21/08 through Sunday, 11/23/08. Cost will be $10. Any Eastern Catholic Boy Scout or Venturer interested in a weekend of Eastern Catholic Scout Fellowship and working towards the Light is Life emblem should RSVP to Deacon Lance Weakland at 724-223-8048 or camporee@byzcathscouting.org by 10/31/08.

Here's a question. Do Eastern Catholic Boy Scouts work for an Ad Alteri Dei or an Alpha and Omega badge?

They work for the Light is Life emblem, hence the name.

I am "chaplain" and Religious Badge Coordinator for my son's Boy Scout Troop. As things are now, Eastern Catholic Scouts work for all the same badges as Latin Catholic Scouts (Light of Christ, Parvuli Dei, and Pope Pius XII), with the exception of "Ad Altare Dei". In place of "Ad Altare Dei", they earn the "Light is Life" badge, the content of which is quite good. What is sad is that they do not have the opportunity to earn other badges which are more Eastern in content. It's not a case of the RC's imposing their will, but more of a case of the Eastern Catholics not developing anything else.

We are working on that in our archeparchial committee. Expect to see new patches and emblems in the very near future.

Whatever the name of the award, having our youth pursue an independent interest in developing their faith in the church is to be commended. The scouts should be lauded for encouraging this, and we as members of our respective churches should be encouraging scouting and our youth to pursue these awards.

These camporee/retreats will bear fruit in the generation that will leading the church soon.

Actually, since I homed school our youngest two children - now 23 & 25 years old - I found the award good enough to use as part of my homeschooling. It was sent to the Archimandrite at Seaton for approval. The son I used it with, became an Eagle Scout.

WE PROUD PARENTS OF TWO EAGLE SCOUTS!

It is funny to hear the gandbaby's dad and godfather(our other son) planning the grandson's Eagle progress already - he's only 2 1/2 years old. biggrin Yep, scouting runs deep in families.

I echo Altar Server! Scouting played a big role in my life and was a great way to spend time with my dad, make good friends in the community.

Keep going, David, and really get into your Eagle project - it is something that you will always remember. Mine (I made some lecterns/analoys) are still in use after all these years in my former RC grade and middle school and school chapel.

My son is 7 and isn't into sports. How much time does Scouting take up in a parent's life? Unfortunately, my time is very limited right now and I don't want to add another burden to my overworked wife. I think my son needs some time to be rowdy with other boys, but I'm also concerned about their influence on him as well.
