I saw this on the St. Emilian website. I hope this doesn't start a trend! sick

"HALLOWEEN FUN: St. Emilian’s invites you for HALLOWEEN FUN on Sunday, November 2, 2008 from 12:45 – 2:00 PM. Come in costume for 11:30 AM Liturgy and then to the Hall for Games, Prizes, and Food! There is a sign-up sheet in the Vestibule – please let us know how many children will be attending. Hope to see you there."

Where will it end?

Before you know it, we'll be bringing painted eggs and other fertility signs into church at springtime, and decorate fir trees to honor Thor at the winter solstice.

Halloween! Latinization?

Don't blame everything that comes into the Church on the Latins. This Halloween thing was not a custom in either of my ethnic backgrounds--Swedish or German--in Europe. I think this whole thing has developed here in the U.S. and is part of a neo-pagan growth that is replacing us all as the focus of culture.

The roots [inventors.about.com] of Halloween are Celtic.

Maybe someone should alert the pastor of Saint Emilian of the consequences that could happen by celebrating a "Halloween liturgy" during this age of Youtube.

It was only two years ago that the infamous Halloween Mass in the Diocese of Orange, CA was posted on YouTube and other websites. eek

The pastor later made a public apology to his bishop.

Hearing about things like this, I begin to wonder if there isn't some sort of conspiracy to throw out the orthodoxy in the Catholic Church from the inside. and what about female altar servers? Ive heard of some Byzantine priests using them, how can this be?

A few observations of the bulletin at this parish.

I know that they used to have Vespers there. Now I like to enjoy a glass of red wine as much as the next person (Caymus or Opus One if possible smile ), but it is a shame to see that there is time for Saturday Liturgy and Wine Tastings but Vespers has gone out the window? Plus Matins used to celebrated as well, that's gone too now?

Sunday Liturgy used to get ~130, Saturday Liturgy (which was after Vespers) used to get ~50. I had heard that attendance was down somewhat, it appears that it is so, granted this is only one bulletin, but I am most surprised at 63 on a Sunday, this was one of the growing parishes in the Eparchy. I know some on here get upset when I bring up dwindling numbers, the above is just an observation.

Halloween Liturgy with costumes?!?! All I can say is that this used to be (as within the last 3 years) one of the more 'Traditional' parishes relatively speaking. The times they are a changing!
