http://www.risu.org.ua/eng/news/article;25431/#Holodomor Recognised as Crime Against Humanity by European Parliament 25.10.2008, [15:22] // Foreign relations // On 23 October, the European Parliament recognised the Ukrainian Holodomor as a crime against humanity. Its plenary session in Strasbourg adopted a resolution commemorating the victims of the Holodomor by an overwhelming majority. In a resolution on the commemoration of the Holodomor, the artificial famine in Ukraine in 1932-1933, MEPs describe it as "an appalling crime against the Ukrainian people, and against humanity". According to the resolution, the Holodomor, which caused the deaths of millions of Ukrainians, "was cynically and cruelly planned by Stalin`s regime in order to force the Soviet Union`s policy of collectivisation of agriculture against the will of the rural population in Ukraine", as UNIAN reports. MEPs believe that "recalling crimes against humanity in European history should help to prevent similar crimes in the future" and they stress that "European integration has been based on a readiness to come to terms with the 20th century`s tragic history and that this reconciliation with a difficult history does not denote any sense of collective guilt, but forms a stable basis for the construction of a common European future founded on common values". The resolution therefore makes a "declaration to the people of Ukraine and in particular to the remaining survivors of the Holodomor and the families and relatives of the victims". It "recognises the Holodomor (the artificial famine of 1932-1933 in Ukraine) as an appalling crime against the Ukrainian people, and against humanity". The text then "strongly condemns these acts, directed against the Ukrainian peasantry, and marked by mass annihilation and violations of human rights and freedoms". It also "expresses its sympathy with the Ukrainian people, who suffered this tragedy, and pays its respects to those who died as a consequence of the artificial famine of 1932-1933". Lastly, the resolution "calls on the countries which emerged following the break-up of the Soviet Union to open up their archives on the Holodomor in Ukraine of 1932-1933 to comprehensive scrutiny so that all the causes and consequences can be revealed and fully investigated". • http://www.news.mediaport.info

Слава Ісусу Христу!
I applaud accountability even if it took 3/4 of a century. If the genocide of millions were reported and condemned when it happened perhaps Hitler would not rival the reputation of Stalin today.
A couple points, although the peasantry was a collateral statistic the genocide was to brake the gentry, the land owning intelligential. If countries formerly subjugated by Soviet muscle are encouraged to open their archives on the subject, how about Stalin’s apologist Walter Duranty and his employer the NY Times? If Ukraine is claimed as canonical property by the Moscow Patriarch should he not pray for these 10 million innocents? That may help elevate “why there is so much 'bad blood' between Russia and Ukraine? Is it current because Ukraine is now independent or has it been a long history of oppression?” quote from #302471.

I do wish that these notices would not use the term "con-celebrated" for what is not a liturgy. The last time this term was used here on the forum it was for a service in St Peters with the Pope and the Patriarch of Constantinople and we had pages of comments from various posters who were trying to work out what it was that was in fact going on at the service on that occasion.

Would the use of the word "conducted" meet with your approval?

The Voice of the Ukrainian American Community Commemorating the 75th Anniversary of Ukraine's Genocide of 1932-1933
NEW YORK - The now annual national observance to commemorate Ukraine's Genocide of 1932-1933 will take place at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City on Saturday, November 15, 2008 at 2PM. As this year marks the 75th anniversary of one of the worst cases of man's inhumanity towards man, and perhaps the most extreme example of the use of food as a weapon, we urge the Ukrainian American community to attend the ecumenical service and honor the millions of innocent victims who perished as a result of the Soviet policy of forced collectivization.
Prior to the ecumenical service, the UCCA NYC Branch, on behalf of the National Committee to Commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Ukraine's Genocide of 1932-1933, will hold a food drive in Dag Hammarskjold Plaza from 9:00AM to 1:00PM before embarking at 1:00 PM on a solemn walk to St. Patrick's Cathedral. "We decided that there is no better way to memorialize our brethren who were starved to death 75 years ago, than by collecting food for today's hungry in New York City," stated Andrij Dobriansky, a UCCA NYC Branch member and one of the initiators of the food drive project.
