Does anyone know of him being commemorated in any church other than the Church of England/Church In Wales? I recently contacted a parishioner of a GOC in Cardiff about it and he told me that they only commemorate their Saints..

Thanks for any info

Dear Dewi,

Yes, of course St David of Wales is commemorated by the Orthodox Church. His Feastday is 1 /14 March, as in the Latin Church. There was a Ukase of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside a Russia a few decades ago which definitively authorised the celebration of many Saints of the Orthodox West, including, I believe, St David.

Warmest Regards,

Fr David Straut

P.S. My Patron Saint is the Holy Prophet-King David, after whom I was named by my Protestant parents, but I revere St David of Wales a secondary Patron.

Dear Dewi,

Your patron, St David of Wales, is honoured by all Catholics as well!

My wife and I always sport a leek brooch on our lapels on March 1st in his honour and we have his icon.

The Cross of St David is a gold Cross on a black field, yes? I've the Cross flag of St Piran of Cornwall, white cross on black.

As a Celtic saint, St David of Wales was heir to many Eastern Church traditions, including the recital of the Psalms in 12-Psalm units at the turn of every hour - a tradition that comes from northern Africa and the Thebaid.

There is an Orthodox garden chapel of St David and St Nicholas in Llanelli. The joint dedication is to honour both the Welsh and the Greek heritage.

There is an Orthodox service to St David, composed by Reader Isaac Lambertson available online here:

My pleasure. You might also enjoy this book on the Life of St David published in 1923. It's an English translation from various manuscript sources and interestingly includes sections relating to St David from the lives of various Irish saints. You can download it as a pdf from the Internet Archive:

A good link to read of the life of St David and to see the St David's flag. Also you will see what David is in Welsh.

Dear DewiMelkite,

You could try forming your own local St David's Society and also approaching your municipal representative to perhaps get them to fly St David's flag on March 1st - that is common in the Dominion of Canada here.

In Ottawa, the Welsh Red Dragon figures prominently in the architecture of the Parliament Building as well.

Y Draig Goch, ddyry Cochwin! The Red Dragon inspires to action!

(Please feel free to correct my Welsh Gaelic spelling - it's a tad rusty!)

LOL, Pavel, check the OP's nick - methinks he is already aware of how the Saint's name is rendered in Welsh

Of course eating leeks on the day is required if you are Welsh.

It's nice to see St. David being spoken of on this site so warmly Believing myself to be Welsh he used to be one of my patrons until after doing extensive genealogical research it turned out our family was Cornish in ancestry, so I had turn to St. Piran!

Dear Predanije,

As you know, the Cross of St Piran is a white one on a black background and I have it in my collection.

"Wal" is a name often used by the Celts (it means "wild" or "wandering"). Wales, Cornwall, Wallonia, Wallace, Wallachia, Walnuts etc. all refer to this Celtic ancestry.
