Russian film director Pavel Lungin is perhaps most famous for his bleak, gritty dramas about the despair of post-Communist Russia, earning him a reputation as a fan favorite at film festivals around the world. His most recent film, Ostrov (The Island), was named the closing picture at the 2006 Venice Film Festival, nominated for a Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2007, and was the winner of nearly every Nika Award imaginable. Dear Im,
Thank you for the information and link to OSTROV. My wife are always looking for movies which have a moral center. We are members of Netflix and have already watched RUBLEV.

It is a great movie; we have checked it out from our local library at least half a dozen times.
joepilgrim, if you like Tarkovsky you may also want to check into getting some of Paradzhanov's movies as well, especially Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, a love story set amongst the Hutsuls of Western Ukraine.

For those interested, Pyotor Mamonov is currently working on a movie loosely based on the life of St Stephen of Perm regarding the first Trans Volga monastics. It is due to be released in 2011.
