Did I read somewhere that the Patriarch is ultimately chosen by lot? Something about 3 candidates being elected and lots are cast to choose the Patriarch from these three?

No, that wasn't done this time. The procedure you described was used in the election of Patriarch Tikhon in 1917 and in the election of Serbian Patriarch Pavle in 1990.
