WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama has signed an executive order ending the ban on federal funds for international groups that perform abortions or provide information on the option.

Liberal groups welcomed the decision while abortion rights foes criticized the president. Known as the "Mexico City policy," the ban has been reinstated and then reversed by Republican and Democratic presidents since GOP President Ronald Reagan established it in 1984. Democrat Bill Clinton ended the ban in 1993, but Republican George W. Bush re-instituted it in 2001 as one of his first acts in office.

Obama signed it quietly, without coverage by the media, late on Friday afternoon, a contrast to the midday signings with fanfare of executive orders on other subjects earlier in the week.

This was discussed before the election and ignored by many, Lord have mercy...

"A voice in Rama was heard, lamentation and great mourning; Rachel bewailing her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not".

It sounds like a "Take that, March for Life!" to me.

Yup, sure does. But didn`t we know it was coming, We must be all the more determined to do everything we can via our representatives know how we feel about Ffoca, he wants us to be discouraged and give up the fight. He will now find out not everyone wants his kind of change.

It is a dreadful and bitter "I told you so..." to those Catholics who voted for this man. Much more to come, I am afraid...

I heard a Bishop tell his Senator that FOCA will shut down over 30% of the healthcare in this country, because no bishop will comply with FOCA, forcing Catholic hospitals to perform abortions.

I think Bishops need to get those baptismal candles ready to douse (and they need to let them KNOW it will be doused) when that legislation starts to make its way through both houses of congress. Any Catholic who votes for this monstrosity of justice needs to be excommunicated.

Mary and I attended Mass yesterday evening at the Sacred Heart Co-cathedral in Houston. The priest was asking those in attendance to contact their senators and congressional representatives to urge them to vote against the FOCA. Hopefully, this effort, as well as other similar efforts will have the effect of defeating the FOCA.

Our Church signed and set several post cards opposing any form of FOCA. I understand that many Catholic parishes did the same.

It is now off, but if anyone saw the comments about this on the BBC news online site, 'Have your say'...they would be absolutely speechless to how supportive people from all over the world are of this...to the extent that many of the comments even seemed to celebrate abortion, rather than lament it as the sad event which it is--even for those who have had one.. There were also alot of hateful comments against Christianity, Pres. Bush's Christianity, the Vatican, and Catholics. Their logic, was positively lacking, if not unbelievable. Most of them actually "applauded" President Obama for this!

From the comments I saw, I am now more convinced than ever that there are many who voted for this President because they saw it as an end to what they see as 'uncompassionate conservatism' which they hate, and as an end on the ban on the many moral, ethical, and sexual agendas which they wish to see come to fruition.

Athanasius,

I haven't seen the post card requesting the rejection of FOCA, but here is the link to the petition available to be downloaded:

http://www.nrlc.org/FOCA/FOCA2008Petition.pdf

An excellent site for sincere pro-life Christians is
http://www.nrlc.org/FOCA/FOCA2008Petition.pdf
It includes everything from prayers,to news, to actual pictures of abortioned babies to homilies.

Alice's post about the hate comments by pro-abortionists (I've seen them on www.change.org [change.org] ) reminds us how much these people need our prayers "to be delivered from the evil one."

Of course he signed it quietly not to cause outcry and uproar.
But the voice of God will not be silenced.
And we are about to reap what we have sown.
God have mercy on this nation.

It is interesting how hypocritial these people are being against the torture of terrorist and yet think nothing of torturing the innocents. Let God arise and His enemies be scattered.

I was wondering how far to take Pelosi's statement that "family planning services reduce cost [to the Government]." It would not be difficult to expand her statement on contraception to abortion.

If more contraception means less babies and lower cost, then abortion would guarantee that lower cost.

When congress discovers one day that our nation needs to tighten its belt with other means than spending more money, how much blood will be spilled for greenbacks?
