Addressing the incense-filled gathering earlier, Kirill had made a strident call for church unity and urged the faithful to resist Protestant and Catholic proselytizing, dampening hopes of a transformation in poisonous ties with Rome. This is nothing. Kirill has spent much of his life as bishop building cordial relations with Catholics and Protestants. Of course he has to make noises like these: it is clear that there is a small but solid bloc of Church traditionalists opposed to him precisely because of his cordiality with the Vatican and, with the Diomid case still fresh in the minds of most, he has no choice but to alleviate their fears. Retreat in order to advance. Even Pope Benedict XVI spent his first 18 months in office that way.

We actually represent the the overwhelming majority. Unfortunately, the choices presented provided little option. Not to say that Vladika Patriarch Kirill is in any way a bad man, or ill suited for leadership. On the contrary, he has a proven leadership record. If only he were a bit more "hard" as it were, and less of a politician. The good that could come out of his leadership could be renewed cooperation with Rome in combating the moral decay so prevalent in the 21'st century. My concerns lie more with the "so called" Ecumenical talks. What is needed is a St Mark of Ephesus, not a Henry Kissinger. Just my 2 kopechki... Alexandr

AXIOS!
I pray that this leader will be a shining beacon of light for the Orthodox Christian world, in his speaking up strongly against contemporary immorality and lack of ethics...and that his leadership and example will be a strong force for those Orthodox who need it throughout the world...
In Christ, Alice

We must all pray that the Patriarch-Elect (to be enthroned on Sunday) will govern the Church with holiness and wisdom, guided by the Holy Spirit. His father and grandfather were both imprisoned by the Communists, and his own record to date is encouraging.
Eis polla eti, Despota!

Again, I say Axios ! and Prayers !
I am glad at his selection. From what I can tell, he seems to be the right man for the job at this time.
May God bless him as he tries to pastor the Russian Church, which has such great and pressing needs; and then, in addition, to take care of external affairs too.

May God grant him many blessed years! Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but a Patriarch of Moscow is referred to as 'His Holiness.' A Metropolitan or Archbishop who heads an autocephalous Church (e.g. the Church of Greece) is referred to as 'His Beatitude.' (And just to throw in a related bit of trivia: the Patriarch of New Rome is referred to as 'His All-Holiness.') Fr David Straut

Have they now reunited with ROCOR? Apparently not. I must commend you, Pilgrim, for trying to remember with all this ROCOR schism information. Many of us in the Russian Church Abroad are unable to keep up. I do know that recently a parish and Archpriest in Florida returned to us after a brief flirtation with the schismatics. There are getting to be so many "Real" ROCOR /True Russian Orthodox schismatic groups with a handful of parishes each that one despairs of keeping track of all the developments. The Russians are no different than the Greeks nowadays. Fr David Straut
