It is interesting to read this nearly four-year-old article in the New York Times (Apr. 23, 2005):

Pope-to-Be Reopened Mexican Sex Abuse Inquiry [nytimes.com]

I must admit that if I had read this back then, I would have been quite sceptical. Some elements of the story have never been confirmed, such as the alleged 1999 conversation between Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and Bishop Carlos Talavera of Coatzacoalcos. Now, however, with the benefit of hindsight, it is easy (too easy, perhaps!) to conclude that something should have been done sooner.
