Tulsa is closer to Guthrie than Irving, TX, by about 2 hours.

I used to live in Lawton, also - was going to send you this in a PM and ask you where you went to church, but the board said you couldn't receive them.

I did not attend any church when I lived in Lawton.

Now that I am planning to move back to Lawton, I am thinking of attending one of the Orthodox Churches in Whichita Falls, TX on Sundays and going to the Byzantine Cahtolic parishes in Tulsa or Irving, TX once a month.

There are two Latin parishes in Lawton. I would not attend either of them.

Correction:

I was under the impressiion I could attend an Orthodox Church Divine Liturgy and fulfill my Sunday Obligation is there was not a Byzantine Parish any where near me. Apparently I am obligated to go to a Latin Rite Parish if they are near and a Byzantine is not.

So my revised plan would be attend Saturdat Vespers at an Orthodox Church and go to the Latin Rite Parish on Sundays. I still am going to go to Tulsa or Irving once a month.

Joanna, perhaps my wife and I can swing through Guthrie on the way to Tulsa and give you a lift if you desire? We will not be moving to Lawton until end of March/beginning of June.

God Bless

Is this the uniform understanding? I always go to an Orthodox service if I'm traveling.

I'm puzzled as to this myself. I am going to ask my priest when I see him next.

I spoke with many priets, and I got the same answer. A Catholic can not fulfil his/her Sunday Obligation by attending an Orthodox parish when there is a Catholic parish (any Rite) nearby, which one can reasonably attend.

I also spoke with an Orthodox priest, told him I have no intention of converting to Orthodoxy but would like to continue with my Eastern prayer life in a geographical area void of Byzantine Catholic parishes. His suggestion was to attend Saturday Vespers and go to Catholic Parish on Sunday.

So we will go to the Orthodox on Saturday evening, Latin Rite Catholic on Sunday, and commute to a Byzantine Catholic parish on holy days of obligation. Good, now I just need to find a Western Rite Orthodox Parish and become thoroughly confused. wink

Blessings,
Didymus

You sound like us. Byzantine Liturgy during the week, Wednesday & Friday right now, when possible and Saturday night. Our Bible study is at the Byzantine Parish. Sunday at the RC parish. I am following a meatless Fast again this year. Hard to explain to our RC friends. wink

The Byzantine Divine Liturgy will be served March 29, 2009 at 6:30 PM in Beckman Hall at St. Charles Borromeo in Oklahoma City. All are welcome to come. For more information call Fr. Philip at 405-789-2595.

It is unknown whether the Liturgy will be offered with any regularity, but it is a start.

Didymus,

Please keep us informed as to whether this becomes a recurring service of the Divine Liturgy.

Many years,

Neil

I was not able to attend. I did not get to Lawton, OK until April 3rd. My wife who has been here working for the past month was also unable to attend because of transportation issues. I am going to call Fr. Phillip and check in with him to see if and when it will be offered again. Due to these tough economic times driving to Tulsa, OK or Irving, TX is really not an option at all.

On a side note we did attend Blessed Sacrament for the Palm Sunday Vigil, it was beautiful and I was thoroughly impressed with a solemn Novus Ordo Mass. We went down to Whichita Falls, TX to the Greek Orthodox Church on Sunday but was dismayed to find that they do not have a resident priest or regular liturgy. We did talk to some very nice Greek ladies who told us in no uncertain terms that we have to come back on Saturday April 11 for the Divine Liturgy and Greek Festival afterwards.

Since the Greek church did not have liturgy we went next door to an Antiochan Western Rite Orthodox Church, St. Benedict of Nursia. Another wonderful church where we witnessed a Pre-Schism Latin Liturgy in Elizabethian English. We were welcomed and encouraged to participate. Although very solemn, and sacred; it was not an Eastern Liturgy.

Were going to go to a Russian Orthodox Church in Oklahoma City sometime for Great Vespers. For now, until a more permanent Byzantine Cathollic presence is established we are going to attend Blessed Sacrament to make our Sunday Obligation and visit any Eastern Liturgy when possible. And to try our hardest to bo to a Byzantine Catholic Liturgy in Oklahoma City when offered.

With Best Regards,
Didymus
