Friends:
I teach U.S. History at a predominantly Black high school (about 75-80% Black and about 20-25% Hispanic-almost no students from any other group). One of my colleagues has honored me by asking me to be the keynote speaker at her congregation's Black History program on the 22nd of this month. Please pray that this event go well.

Ryan Shlomo Ryan, You have my prayers. Also, as a point of history here are a couple of people that you may wish to incorporate into your presentation. Information can be found from Black Catholic Chicago's [ blackcatholicchicago.org] website. I hope this helps. Fush BaShlomo, Yuhannon

Perhaps you can bring up Fr. Tolten -- the first Black Catholic priest that was born a slave. In addition to the Greek Catholics, Bishop Ireland was no friend of this black priest either!

Another story to be told is the story of Pierre Toussaint. http://www.ewtn.com/library/MARY/TOUSSAIN.htmFather Quinn, who preached his funeral eulogy, said: "All would be grateful for having known Pierre. . .; there are few left among the clergy superior to him in zeal and devotion to the Church and for the glory of God; among laymen, not one." Revolutionary General Philip Schuyler said it best: "I have known Christians who were not gentlemen, gentlemen who were not Christians. One man I know who is both and that man is black."
